Patch History[]
Youmuu's Ghostblade is at risk of becoming the preferred item for several ranged hybrid attacker-casters and we'd like to make sure they're more about repeated damage than burst. We're also wary of ranged champions simply running around too quickly, since catching them in the first place is critical to their counter-play. As such, we're nerfing some of the move speed for ranged users only, as its base speed went up last patch.
- Haunt Out of Combat Bonus Movement Speed: 20 ⇒ 20 (melee) / 10 (ranged)
- Wraith Step Active Bonus Movement Speed Duration: 6 seconds ⇒ 6 (melee) / 4 (ranged)
We're shifting both Opportunity and Youmuu's Ghostblade in ways that, on their surface, appear power neutral. However, players can choose which items they want to buy, so a more focused Opportunity will be better for burstier assassins and a more focused Youmuu's will be better for those who want to roam. We expect both of these items to find a home among various assassins and as always are happy to re-tune any items that aren't viable on anyone.

With more ranged champions opting to pick up Lethality in the new season, we need to dial back the amount of power they’re getting from these items. Ranged champions are using the movement speed this item is offering to keep up heavy teamfight uptime while also increasing their survivability which is a bit too much to offer on a single item for a class where movement speed is so valuable.

- Active Bonus Movement Speed: 20% ⇒ 20% (melee) / 15% (ranged)

- Active - Wraith Step: Gain 25% movement speed and ghosting for 6 seconds ⇒ Gain 20% movement speed and ghosting for 6 seconds
- Passive - Haunt: Gain 40 Move Speed while out of combat (Note: the Spectral Shard mechanic has been removed)
Youmuu's Ghostblade isn't pulling its weight for assassins who want to get into fights and burst their primary target quickly. Instead, it's got a few decent marksman users. Youmuu's has a strong mechanic for start-of-fight lethality, so a buff to Haunt should disproportionately buff assassins without giving as much power to marksmen.
- Spectral Shard Lethality: 3-12 (level 7-18) ⇒ 7-18 (level 7-18)
Of all the new items in patch 13.10, Ghostblade was a clear winner. We want Ghostblade to be the ideal item for roaming around the map with a small bump in damage for one big initial burst. It's currently giving way too much damage way too often, so we're lowering the bonus Lethality and slowing down how fast the stacks accumulate. This should keep Ghostblade as the speedy item option, but should limit how often it's giving tons of damage to its users.
- Ability Haste: 20 ⇒ 15
- Bonus Lethality at Maximum Stacks: 8-20 (based on level) ⇒ 3-12 (based on level)
- Distance Per Stack: 45 ⇒ 55 (Note: this equates to roughly 20% slower stack generation.)
Youmuu's went from being a beloved aggressive pick to an underutilized niche item. We nerfed its generic power last season to give room for other situational items, but we're seeing now that we went a little too far. AD assassins have been yearning for a good general item rather than defaulting to counter pick-ups like Serpent's Fang. So, *drumroll please*... we're reverting the patch 10.23 changes and welcoming back 2020’s Youmuu's Ghostblade!
Patch 9.23
Active ghosts users.
It's literally the same except for one quality of life buff. Still buy it if you want to go fast. We're only putting this here for ease of comparison.
v7.14
Grants even more movement speed. Lethality up, attack damage down.
Doubling down on Ghostblade’s identity as the mobility-oriented Dirk upgrade, now that it’s the only one that grants movement speed. It already offers every damage stat a physical assassin wants (attack damage, lethality, and cooldown reduction) so we didn’t need to do much else here.
v7.4
Lethality down.
Up until the introduction of Lethality, Ghostblade granted 20 flat armor penetration. We wanted to avoid shrinking that number during the transition away from flat penetration, which was a big enough change to get used to on its own. Now that Lethality’s found its place in the stats system, we’re bringing Ghostblade in line with Dirk’s other upgrades.
v6.22
Move faster. Active no longer grants attack speed.
The base stats attached to Youmuu’s Ghostblade were a bit of a grab-bag for physical damage, making it useful for basically every AD-focused champion. Most of its unintended users benefit too much from the active’s attack speed, so we’re removing it.
v6.12
-5 AD
Just as marksmen scale with critical strike and attack speed, casters and assassins scale with cooldown reduction and flat armor penetration. Youmuu's Ghostblade fills this ‘core scaling item’ niche for casters and assassins, but also everyone who builds AD due to how much power it brings in raw stats. We want Ghostblade to stay useful for the classes it serves, so rather than reduce its secondary stats, we're shaving off a bit of attack damage. Combined with buffs to other AD items this patch, we're hoping the relative difference is sufficient to create a meaningful tradeoff for picking Youmuu's if CDR and flat pen aren’t your main stats.
v5.22
No longer has crit, but has wayyy more damage.
Simply put, Ghostblade often lived in the valley between 'An assassin item that has crit I don't need' and 'A marksman item that isn't as good as Phantom Dancer'. With Marksman getting a host of new toys, we're refocusing Ghostblade as a much-needed buy for Assassins.
- "NEW" YOUMUU'S PARITY: Active now lasts for 6 seconds on ranged champions as well (previously lasted only 4 seconds on ranged champions and 6 seconds on melee champions)
- Flat Armor Penetration is now UNIQUE
- Cooldown Reduction and Armor Penetration bonuses are no longer Unique
- Unique Active changed to "Gain 20% Movement Speed and 40% Attack Speed for 6 seconds (4 seconds if you're ranged) (45 second cooldown).
- Cost adjusted from 2,687 (600) to 2,700 (563)
- Youmuu's Ghostblade added
