Unicorns of Love is European organization. This page details the history of their original European team; for their CIS team, see here, for their Prime League team, see here.
History[]
2014 Season[]
Unicorns of Love won several Go4LoL tournaments in early 2014 on the EU West server. As the year progressed, they started to play in more prominent challenger events and do well, taking third place in the Summer Black Monster Cup. They participated in the first Spring Series #1 play-in but were eliminated by EYES ON U in the second round.
On May 15, PowerOfEvil joined the team as the new midlaner, replacing Xodiaz, and the team qualified for the Summer Series #1 of the EUCS, though they lost to Ninjas in Pyjamas 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
After another quarterfinal finish in Summer Series #2, UoL placed 6th in the Points ranking shared with Playing Ducks. However, because only either of them could advance to the Summer Playoffs, the teams had to play a tiebreaker match, which UoL won 2-0 to eventually take the last spot.
With Gilius now subbing for Dan, the playoffs went particularly well, despite the Unicorns of Love losing to H2k-Gaming in the semifinal. The team went on to beat Ninjas in Pyjamas in the third-place match, securing themselves a spot at the Spring Promotion Tournament. At this point, Gilius was made a full member of the UoL roster.[1]
With the Promotion Tournament came a chance for the Unicorns of Love to qualify for the 2015 LCS Spring Split. The Promotion Tournament was a huge success, with the team beating Millenium 3-2 in their promotion matchup. This meant that they would be playing in the LCS the following season.
2015 Season[]
Unicorns of Love were the European team fan-voted to IEM San Jose, their first event with their new jungler, Kikis.[2] The team surprised audiences by making it to the semifinals of the tournament after defeating Lyon Gaming 2-0 and then Team SoloMid 2-0, with Kikis pulling off jungle Twisted Fate and a stunning performance on Syndra from PowerOfEvil. They placed 2nd at the tournament, losing to Cloud9 in the finals.
The EU LCS Spring Season was a huge success for Unicorns Of Love, finishing the regular season in 5th place, partly thanks to PowerOfEvil's impressive performances throughout the split, which earned him 2 Weekly MVP awards. This meant that team would participate in the Spring Playoffs, where they would face and beat Gambit Gaming in the quarterfinals. Hylissang and the team managed to make LCS history when they became the first team to knock out a 1st place regular season finisher in the playoff semifinals, taking down SK Gaming convincingly. They went on to lose the playoff final to Fnatic in a close-fought series, finishing 2nd in their first LCS split, and picking up 70 Championship Points in the process.
The Summer Season was equally as successful for Unicorns Of Love, despite the mid-season departure of Kikis. They finished the regular season in 4th place with Gilius in the jungle, ensuring the team's participation in the Summer Playoffs. After the close of the regular season, they announced H0R0 as their new starting jungler. In the playoffs, the team overcame Team ROCCAT in the quarterfinals but were taken out themselves in the semifinals by a dominant Fnatic. 40 Championship Points gained here secured Unicorns Of Love a spot in the 2015 Season Europe Regional Finals. A high seeding meant that the team would start in the final of the gauntlet, where they met and were beaten convincingly by Origen.
2016 Season[]
After Fnatic withdrew from IEM San Jose due to medical problems, Unicorns of Love took their spot, fielding Hylissang and Vizicsacsi from their 2015 roster along with new members Gilius, Fox, and Steeelback. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the by Counter Logic Gaming, losing 2-0. After IEM, former Gambit jungler Diamondprox replaced Gilius. After the second week of the LCS, however, Diamondprox was forced to step down as starting jungler due to visa issues. UOL went through two jungle substitutes, Djoko and Rudy, before settling on loulex. They finished in fifth place and then lost in the first round of the playoffs to Origen.
Going into Summer Split UOL signed rookie Exileh and the korean free agents Move and Veritas to replace Steeelback, loulex and Fox who left to other EU LCS teams. The new roster struggled going into the split only earning 3 points from their first 6 series. After drawing Roccat and winning against 3rd place H2k which got them 4 points and closed the gap to the teams above they climbed the standings to playoff positions quickly and remained there until the end of the split. In playoffs they had a convincingly 3-1 victory against Giants before losing to defending champions and regular season winners G2 1-3. They also lost the third-place match against Vitality with a clear 1-3 which earned them 3rd seed for regional finals where their opponent were once again Giants. After sweeping them and the struggling Fnatic squad they equalized the final against Splyce twice but ultimately lost the series 2-3 which denied them their first World Championship appearance.
After the World Championship UOL replaced Splyce in IEM Oakland. They swept INTZ in Round 1 before upsetting NA LCS winners TSM 2-1 once again to face LMS Winners Flash Wolves in the final. In a to the surprise of many close final with many one sided games they managed to convert their second matchpoint to win the series 3-2 and earned themselves their first international title.
2017 Season[]
Spring Split[]
Despite their successful finish in the 2016 Season UOL decided to replace jungler Move with Xerxe who played the split priot for TCL team Dark Passage. Shortly before the start of the 2017 Season they were informed that Veritas was homesick so they accepted his desire to return to Korea and signed Samux from spanish team Vodafone Giants.Spain as his replacement. Surpringly the team synergized quickly and they managed to dominate their group B against Splyce, H2k, Team Vitality, and Origen in the Regular Season going into playoffs as 1st seed with a semifinal bye. In semifinals they beat Misfits 3-1 before failing to stop G2 from their third consecutive EU LCS title losing the final 1-3.
Summer Split[]
Managing to keep their successful roster for Summer Split they could not quite replicate their performance in a nearly identical group where promoted Mysterious Monkeys replaced Origen. During the split UOL participated at the newly created Rift Rivals against NA LCS teams TSM, Cloud 9 and Phoenix1. As the best european team in the group stage they faced TSM in the grand final but were 0-3 swept by them.
They ended the Regular Season in second place behind H2k and were swept in quarterfinals by Misfits. Their performance from Spring Split earned them 2nd seed going into Regional Finals as last chance to finally participate at a 2017 World Championship but their dream quickly came to an end as H2k managed to beat them 3-2 in Round 2.
2018 Season[]
Spring Split[]
As replacement for Vizicsacsi, Xerxe, and Hylissang whose performances interested other teams they signed WhiteKnight from NiP, Kold from Splyce, and Totoro from LCK team bbq Olivers. They started the Regular Season terrible and despite having a good run in the middle of the split they could not keep that performance up and ended in last place after losing the last 4 games.
Summer Split[]
After a more consistent but only marginaly better Summer Split they ended up tied for 7th place with a 7-11 record ending their season early.
2019 Season[]
After they were not accepted for the rebranded LEC they started with a completely new roster and coaching staff in second division of the German regional league.
On the 22nd of May, they announced their entrance to the LCL after having acquired the spot of Team Just. Their roster comprises of 3 former Vega Squadron members who played in MSI 2019.
