Notes[]
- Damage is reflected when hit by a basic attack, regardless of whether the attack deals damage. If the attacker is blinded, or the wearer is protected by a shield or invulnerability, damage will still be reflected.
- By itself, Thornmail reflects at least 22 magic damage on being hit.
- Healing effects triggering on a basic attack (life steal, Udyr's Turtle Stance, Xin Zhao's Determination, etc.) will first be reduced by Grievous Wounds.
- This means that the Grievous Wounds, applied by Bramble Vest, will be effective with the basic attack that triggers the effect.
- Ornn can upgrade this Item to a Mastwerwok Item:

Patch History[]
Thornmail also ended up being one of the big winners of the patch and is currently the most-built armor item in the game. There are other extremely good and underrated armor items, but most players haven’t come to realize how good Unending Despair is, yet…

Patch 11.1
Grievous Wounds
We have noticed that system healing sources have seemed on the strong side. Pulling a systemic anti-healing lever.
Patch 10.23
Damage reduced and now applies improved Grievous Wounds upon immobilizing an enemy.
On top of applying Grievous Wounds when hit, Thornmail now gives tanks a way to proactively apply the effect without waiting for enemies to attack.
Base Stats
Effects
Patch 9.8
Grievous Wounds duration increased.
Making Thornmail's Grievous Wounds duration consistent with the effect on other items.
v7.19
Armor increased
Thanks to Bramble Vest’s efficiency, Thornmail had an amazing build path. With that build path getting weakened, we want to put more stats into Thornmail to ensure it remains a worthwhile upgrade.
v7.14
Now provides health. Now applies Grievous Wounds to attackers
Against champions and teams that lean on heavy healing and regeneration effects, tanky melee types sometimes feel like they’re actually hurting their team by serving as convenient health batteries. While mages have Morellonomicon and other carries have Executioner’s Calling to help focus down healing-oriented threats, we wanted to make sure that melee champs can at least force high-sustain damage dealers to look elsewhere for their healing.
BUILD PATH : | [Cloth Armor + Chain Vest + 1250 gold] | |
⇒ | Bramble Vest + Ruby Crystal + Warden’s Mail + 400 gold |
v6.14
Now on Twisted Treeline.
Another prisoner of the “marksmen used to suck” world order, we left Thornmail off the Treeline since marksmen who clawed their way to relevance probably deserved to be there. Marksmen are now, if anything, too dominant, so it’s high time Thornmail emerged onto the Treeline.
v5.16
Costs more. Reflects less damage back to attackers, but scales with armor.
Another major outlier in terms of effectiveness, Thornmail is at its strongest when you can comfortably stack health. While we aren’t rocking that particular boat today (armor + health is kind of always good), we’re tossing in a hook to make the item also scale with armor-stacking, but in a different way. This also creates neat synergies for champions with on-demand armor buffs (like Leona or Rammus) which is pretty OK by us.
Important to note - if for any reason you experience a decrease in armor % (say, a stray black cleaver to the face), Thornmail will ignore that when calculating its damage. Way to be, Thornmail.
