Team Impulse was previously a North American team. They were created as a rebranding of 2014 NA LCS team LMQ. They disbanded after a competitive ruling banned the organization from LCS participation in May 2016.
History[]
2015 Preseason[]
On December 26, LMQ announced that they were rebranding as Team Impulse. The initial roster included Rush, XiaoWeiXiao, and Adrian, with Fly as their head coach; later, WizFujiiN (now Apollo) and Impact joined the team.[1][2][3][4][5] The team inherited LMQ's seed in the 2015 NA LCS Spring Season.
2015 Season[]
After using Rhux as a substitute for Impact in the first week, Team Impulse finished the round robin with an 11-7 record, in fourth place. In the playoffs, they defeated Gravity before losing to Team SoloMid and then Team Liquid, placing fourth overall. In the summer season, Team Impulse started shakily, placing no higher than sixth through the end of the fifth week. Starting in the sixth week, the team went on a massive winning streak, which was almost able to continue through two roster changes: first, Adrian sat out one game and was replaced by Gate; and second, XiaoWeiXiao was suspended pending an investigation into Elo boosting prior to the ninth week, prompting Adrian to return and Gate to move back to his primary role of mid lane to replace XiaoWeiXiao. This temporary suspension was eventually lengthened to a competitive ban until February 2016. Regardless, Team Impulse finished the last week tied for third place with Gravity and then won their tiebreaker game.
In the summer playoffs, the team beat Dignitas 3-0 before losing to both Counter Logic Gaming and Team Liquid to finish fourth, leaving them with the second-place spot in the Regional Final due to Championship Points. There, they became the second team in a row to fall to underdogs Cloud9 in a reverse sweep and so fell short of the World Championship.
2016 Season[]
Team Impulse rebuilt their roster completely for the 2016 season, moving from Impact, Rush, Gate, Apollo, and Adrian to Feng, Procxin, Pirean, Mash, and Gate, with Gate moving from mid lane to support. Facing visa problems for the first few weeks of play, their roster was unstable until week 4 of the Spring Season. After some early success with their substitute rosters, especially with Seraph in top lane, TIP ended the season in 9th place, losing a 5-13 record tiebreaker to Renegades based on their head-to-head matchup.
In the Promotion Tournament, Team Impulse requalified for the Summer Season with a 3-1 win over the Challenger team Apex Gaming; however, on May 8 they were faced with a competitive ruling banning them from continued participation in the LCS due to not paying their players on time and also not having proper contracts in place with players. The team was also fined $20,000 by Riot.[6] Despite a deadline of May 18 by which they were forced to sell their spot, it wasn't until May 23 that the new team's name -- Phoenix1 -- was revealed.[7]
