Team 8 is a North America based team founded in December of 2013. The team currently resides in their gaming house located in Southern California has been there since the creation of the team.
History[]
2014 Preseason and Formation[]
Team 8 was formed on December 26, 2013 by RicheRich, Guess8, chu8, Slooshi, and Dodo8. Soon after its formation, the team placed second in the Razer League of Legends Holiday Bash, losing to Team LoLPro. On January 17, RicheRich left the team.
2014 Season[]
On February 17, frommaplestreet and CaliforniaTrlolz joined the roster, and chu8 became a sub. It was with this lineup that Team 8 rose to prominence in the North American Challenger scene and eventually made the LCS.
In the first spring series of the NA Challenger Series, Team 8 qualified for the play-in but were defeated in the first round by vVv Gaming Red. In the second spring series, they qualified in the play-in, beating Kings of Tilt to face LMQ in the quarterfinals. They were defeated 2-1, leaving them without enough points to play in the playoffs for a slot in the summer promotion tournament.
Despite their inability to qualify for the 2014 LCS, the team stayed together and played in the Challenger Series once again; however, once again they were defeated in the first round of the play-in for the first summer series, this time to Necrofantasian. Finally, in the second summer series, Team 8 went all the way through the bracket, placing third in a 2-1 victory over LoL Pro for the third-place spot.
Concurrently with their less-than-stellar NACS performance, Team 8 gained attention in the North American Challenger scene for their performances in other Challenger scene events, winning the Black Monster Cup once, the Lone Star Clash 3, and then the Black Monster Cup a second time. Impressively, they finished second in the NACL Season 2, losing 3-1 to LMQ in the finals -- a team that seemed unbeatable in the Challenger scene at the time.
The second Riot-sponsored NACS Summer Series result placed Team 8 fourth in points overall in the NACS Summer Playoffs, and they were finally able to find success in a Riot-sponsored tournament, beating XDG Gaming, Team Coast, and Curse Academy to win the tournament and qualify for a spot at the 2015 LCS Spring Promotion Tournament. In the promotion tournament, Team 8 defeated compLexity 3-2 and qualified for the LCS.
After the promotion tournament, CaliTrlolz announced he would be stepping down from the team because he was unable to delay entrance to pharmaceutical school. However, he was successfully able to petition his school to delay for a year with the support of the community and remain on the team to play in the LCS.[1][2]
2015 Season[]
In February 2015, an article revealed that co-owner Sam Wang was also the owner of an Elo boosting website.[3] Two days later, he stepped down from his position as co-owner.[4]
In the spring split of the 2015 LCS, Team 8 initially slipped into ninth place after the fifth week. After a more successful end to the season, however, they climbed into a tie for the final playoff spot, but lost the tiebreaker to Team Liquid and settled into seventh with a 9-9 record. In the summer season, Slooshi temporarily left the team after the third week for personal reasons and was replaced by Goldenglue. Team 8 once again finished the regular season tied for seventh; however, this time, they lost to Cloud9 and were sent to the 2016 Spring Promotion Tournament. They chose Team Imagine as their Challenger opponent and beat them 3-1 to stay in the LCS for the spring season. After their victory, the team announced that Goldenglue would be their starting mid laner in the 2016 season.[5]
2016 Preseason[]
In October 2015, Team 8 was bought out by a new esports organization called Immortals. See the continuation of their history there.[6]
