Biography[]
Paul "sOAZ" Boyer began gaming with Counter-Strike 1.6. He then transitioned into playing Dota, where he played with the French team iA in Argh League.[42] Originally a mid laner in League of Legends, he transitioned to the top lane as against All authority and Fnatic both acknowledged his skill in that role, and this promptly allowed him to make a name for himself.[43]
Season 1[]
sOAZ was picked up by known eSports team Against All Authority as part of their early League line up, back in late 2010. The team became known as a strong European contender in the new MOBA's growing competitive scene. They were participants in one of Europe's biggest first tournaments, the IEM Season V - LoL Invitational where they placed 2nd, with a win over SK Gaming but losing in the finals to myRevenge. sOAZ and the team went on to the largest global league event at the time, the Riot Season 1 Championship. They were able to make it out of groups after a relegation match to advance, winning over Team gamed!de. In the semifinals, sOAZ fought against the American powerhouse team, Team SoloMid, but were able to best the US players and advance to the winner finals bracket. Facing off against the familiar lineup of MyRevenge, now Fnatic, aAa were unable take 1st, losing 2-0. They then went up again, against Team SoloMid to determine 2nd place, and defeated the American team, winning silver in the tournament.
Pre Season 2[]
After the championship, sOAZ, with his teammates left aAa to join the new team Millenium. He played in few major tournaments, such as IEM Season VI - Global Challenge Cologne where they finished 4th, before he left the team to play a brief stint as jungler for Absolute Legends in October 2011, for a one-month trial. He then went back to top playing for a reformed lineup of aAa.
Season 2[]
sOAZ and the team played in multiple events, such as the major IEM Season VI - World Championship where they were able to take 4th. aAa continued to place high in following tournaments, however in May 2012, the line up decided to disband. Luckily, with sOAZ being a respected and notable top lane,he was picked up in June by long time European stronghold, Fnatic.
In Season 2, he and his new team showed strong performances in tournaments, always placing top 3 in events such as SK Trophy March and IGN ProLeague Elites. In August 2012, the Season 2 Regional Finals was held in Cologne where the top 3 placing teams would be flown to Los Angeles for the Season 2 World Championship for a chance to play for the $1,000,000 grand prize. Fnatic were unable to to achieve top 3 placing, placing 4th in the tournament, losing to Moscow Five and CLG Europe.
Pre-Season 3[]
After the tough loss at regionals, sOAZ and team were able to bounce back strong in preparation for Season 3, winning major tournament DreamHack Winter 2012, and placing 2nd against the world's best at IPL Season 5 Las Vegas in Las Vegas. At IEM Season VII - Global Challenge Cologne, the team went undefeated in their groups and bested the Korean lineup consisting of players that took 2nd at the Season 2 Championship, CJ Entus. However, they were unable to beat other the Korean team, SK Telecom T1, in the finals, placing them 2nd in the tournament. The team next played in IEM Season VII - Global Challenge Katowice, making it out of group stage but losing in the semi-finals to Azubu Frost.
In January 2013, his team had a chance to participate in Riot's new competitive league for upcoming Season 3 for NA and EU, the Riot Season 3 League Championship Series, but had to play for a spot at the Season 3 Europe Offline Qualifier. Fighting out of the group stage and into the quarterfinals, sOAZ and crew were able to best MeetYourMakers in a 2-0 set, to win a spot in the league and the chance to be part of an extremely important, successful project in League of Legends.
Season 3[]
With the North American and European community extremely excited for the amped up events of LCS, Season 3 began with Riot's new league of a 10 week series with the continent's best teams playing against one another. Fnatic became the most consistently powerful team throughout the series, with sOAZ playing a pivotal role, by being an overwhelming top. The the team ended the 10 weeks on top with a intimidating record of 22-6. sOAZ and his comrades had automatically reclaimed their spot in the league for the summer split, when going into the Season 3 EU Spring Playoffs. Being a favorite in the playoffs, the team showed their consistently strong play-style, winning 2-1 vs Evil Geniuses, placing themselves in the finals against another favorite, Gambit Gaming. In a close set of games, Fnatic were able to best the Russians, winning 3-2 and claiming the $50,000 1st prize.
In March 2013, sOAZ participated in 1 v 1 best of five top lane match up against Wickd to claim the top lane spot for the Europe LCS All Star team, which became an amazing spectacle, achieving a record number of over 130,000 concurrent viewers on a personal stream vs TwitchTV. [44] sOAZ won the matchup 3-2, playing the game winning match by cheesing Wickd with Nunu. He was then publicly voted to represent the Europe LCS as their top lane, coming together with other voted players to play in All-Star Shanghai 2013. The tournament was the biggest talked about event of the year in the scene, being held in China in May. The EU LCS first faced off against heavy favorites Korean OGN Champions, and although good early game play occurred from the Europeans, the Korean team overtook them in a 2-0 set. Their next opponent was their sibling league, the North America LCS. Both teams played an explosive two games of up and down fighting, however, NA LCS ended up being the victor, knocking the EU LCS out of the tournament. sOAZ did win the All Star Skills Competition for Top Lane, beating world class names PDD and Shy. He took back home to Fnatic his experiences playing against the worlds best. [45]
sOAZ qualified for the Season 3 World Championship with his team Fnatic, finishing 1st in the Summer Playoffs. The World Championship was a success for sOAZ and the team, finishing top of their group and beating Cloud9 in the quarterfinals. Fnatic were eventually knocked out by Royal Club in the semifinals, though the team performed well throughout the tournament.
2014 Season[]
sOAZ and Fnatic started off their season at the IEM Season VIII - World Championship. The team came in 2nd, losing to KT Rolster Bullets in the Grand Final.
The Spring Split went relatively well for sOAZ and the team. A tight split saw sOAZ perform on a range of champions including Shyvana in particular. Fnatic ended the split in 2nd place behind SK Gaming, securing themselves a place in the Spring Playoffs. The whole team raised their game for the playoffs, and they emerged victorious, after a win against Alliance in their semifinal matchup and another against SK Gaming in the Grand Final.
Due to Fnatic's performance in the Spring Playoffs, they had qualified to compete at All-Star Paris 2014, along with other regional winners from around the world. The team made it to the semifinals of the tournament, only losing to the world champions SK Telecom T1 K.
The start of the Summer Split was shaky for sOAZ and the team. Fnatic could not break in to the top 2 until Week 7 of the split, at which point their main rivals Alliance were already a considerable distance ahead of them in the race for 1st place. sOAZ managed to impress with his Lulu, but Fnatic could only manage a 2nd place finish. The team aimed to put the split behind them and focus on the Summer Playoffs. A close fought win over ROCCAT in the semifinal meant that sOAZ and the team would face Alliance in the final. The match ended in defeat for Fnatic, but the playoffs saw the team seal their qualification for the 2014 Season World Championship.
The World Championship saw Fnatic placed in Group C with Samsung Blue, OMG, and LMQ. The team were only able to win 2 matches out of 6 in their group, meaning that they would go no further in the tournament.
2015 Season[]
After Rekkles, xPeke, and Cyanide left Fnatic, rumors spread that sOAZ would leave the team too, probably to join xPeke's new team Origen; the rumors proved to be true, and in mid-January sOAZ left Fnatic[46] and shortly after joined Origen.[47]
sOAZ and Origen qualified for the EUCS Spring Qualifier via the Challenger Ladder, where they beat Millenium Spirit in their bracket final, securing their qualification to the EUCS Spring Season. Origen were unbeaten until their penultimate game of the split, against LowLandLions.White, and despite dropping that one game easily secured first place in the regular season. Origen also placed highly in tournaments throughout this period, winning the ESL MWC Challenge and Gamers Assembly 2015. The Spring Playoffs saw Origen beat Reason Gaming in the semifinals 2-1 and then going on to sweep Copenhagen Wolves Academy (the team formerly known as LowLandLions.White) in the final to win the tournament and secure automatic qualification to the LCS Summer Season.
Throughout the EU LCS Summer Season, Origen jostled for 2nd position with H2k-Gaming, while Fnatic sat far ahead in an undefeated 1st place throughout. Impressive individual performances including sOAZ's Rumble and Lulu helped the team to a 2nd place regular season finish, and with it a bye past the Summer Playoffs quarterfinal round. In the semifinals, Origen faced off against rivals H2k and won 3-1; perhaps even more impressively, they took two games off Fnatic in the finals despite ultimately losing the series. Their second-place overall finish earned Origen 90 Championship Points, enough for the second seed in the 2015 Season Europe Regional Finals. There, they beat Team ROCCAT in a 3-2 series and then Unicorns of Love in an easy 3-0 and successfully qualified for the 2015 World Championship, where they would play as Europe's #3 seed. Shortly after their qualification, LeDuck decided to leave his role of head coach. He was replaced by analyst Hermit.
At the 2015 World Championship, Origen were drawn into Group D along with Team SoloMid, KT Rolster, and LGD Gaming. Origen went 3-0 in the 1st week of the round robin, which included a backdoor victory against LGD Gaming with sOAZ' Vladimir. They ended the group with a 4-2 record, meaning they would advance to the knockout stage of the tournament. Origen won their quarterfinal series 3-1 against the Flash Wolves, becoming the first Western team to win a best-of-five at a World Championship, but were later knocked out by SK Telecom T1 in the semifinals.
2016 Season[]
Origen and sOAZ competed at IEM San Jose, and were given a bye to the semifinals due to Fnatic's withdrawal from the tournament. The team fielded their roster from the previous season, but with PowerOfEvil in the mid lane and xPeke taking a coaching role. They took down Team SoloMid in the semifinals, and went on to beat Counter Logic Gaming in the final - winning the tournament without losing a single game.
Origen's performance at IEM San Jose resulted in their qualification to the IEM World Championship. At the tournament, they first lost to Royal Never Give Up in the upper bracket of their group before then losing to Team SoloMid in the lower bracket, resulting in the team's elimination from the tournament.
