RNG 2025 Split 1

Royal Never Give Up is a Chinese team, formed by the Royal Club organization after Star Horn Royal Club's relegation from the LPL.

History[]

2016 Season[]

After a 1st-place finish at NESO 2015, RNG finalized a 10-player roster by adding Sask, SHRC and King alumni InSec and NaMei, and two starters from Samsung Galaxy White's Season 4 World Champions - support Mata from Vici Gaming and top-laner Looper from Masters 3. The team impressed early in LPL play, winning consecutive series against Vici and group top seed EDward Gaming. A continued strong performance, including dealing the Qiao Gu Reapers their first series loss of the split, earned an invite to the IEM Season X World Championship in Katowice, Royal's first international tournament in the RNG incarnation. They defeated Origen and Ever to win their group but lost to Fnatic largely in part due to Rekkles' MVP-level performance, primarily as Jhin.

RNG gave playing time to their other five members after IEM Katowice, including InSec picking Master Yi in a comeback win against Energy Pacemaker. All and NaMei marking his return to form by getting a pentakill playing Lucian against Vici. Finishing first in Group B, they earned a bye into the semifinals and then defeated Team WE 3-2 and EDG 3-1 to become LPL champions and earn the right to represent China on home soil at the 2016 Mid-Season Invitational in Shanghai. It marked not only RNG's first LPL championship but also the first for any Royal Club team (including the original Royal Club, Star Horn Royal, and Team King.)

RNG proceeded to impress at MSI, going undefeated over the first three days of group stage play, defeating G2 Esports, Counter Logic Gaming, Flash Wolves, SuperMassive eSports, and even defending world champions and tournament favorites SK Telecom T1. Their first defeat came at the hands of the North American CLG with a massive comeback win, but they still secured the top seed into the playoffs - and a World Championship Pool 1 seed for China. Unfortunately for RNG, SK Telecom T1 recovered from a disappointing fourth place group stage finish, and RNG lost 3-1 in the semifinals - including a perfect game 4 from the Korean team.

Following MSI, InSec, LetMe and Ley stepped down from RNG to focus on the SHRC LSPL squad, but the team acquired former EDG manager San Shao and re-acquired AD Carry Uzi, who had played on Royal's 2013 team and SHRC's 2014 team - both of which had finished second at Worlds. The team was placed in Group B for the Summer Season and ended the Regular Season in first place, with a positive record against all other teams except EDward Gaming. These results, however, do not show the drop in performance that the team suffered, with support player Mata in particular having a rough split and the new superstar botlane playing out of sync, with a conflict between Uzi's patented lane aggressiveness and Mata's roaming tendencies.

Coming into the Semifinals of the Summer Playoffs, Royal faced and bested Team WE in a close 3-2 series. They thus advanced to the Finals, where EDward Gaming waited for them after completing their perfect split run. The Spring Split Finals repeat ended with EDG trumping over Royal 0-3 and exposing the team's struggles, as they were consistently outpaced on a macro level by their rivals. With EDG autoqualifying to the 2016 Season World Championship Royal qualified as the second Chinese seed due to having the most Championship Points.

Royal was placed in Group D alongside NALCS' Team SoloMid, LCK's Samsung Galaxy and EULCS' Splyce. The team lived up to their image of a team composed of highly-talented individuals with an heavy botlane carry focus and glaring problems in the macro game after the laning phase ends; they still managed to brute force their way through the Group Stage with an overall 3-3 score, with two wins against TSM granting them the upper hand in the head-to-head matchup for the second place tiebreaker. They then met SK Telecom T1 in the Quarterfinals: even though they secured Game 1, the Chinese team was eliminated from contention as the Korean powerhouse closed out the series 1-3 and advanced to the Semifinals.

2017 Season[]

After Mata's and Looper's departures, Royal Never Give Up picked up LetMe for the top lane and Ming as their new support. Filling in for two former world champions was tough; however, RNG made it work. They would finish 1st place in Group A of the 2017 LPL Spring Season with a 12-4 regular season record. In the playoffs although they made it to the finals, they lost 0-3 to Team WE in dominating fashion. The 2017 LPL Summer Season was very similar as RNG finished again in 1st place with the same 12-4 regular season record, only this time in Group B. RNG were also part of the LPL delegation that was victorious against the LCK and LMS at the inaugural Rift Rivals in Kaohsiung, going 3-1 over the course of the event, including a win against MVP that clinched their victory against the LCK. The playoffs went similarly to the spring playoffs for the team. RNG made it all the way to the finals again only to lose 3-2 to Edward Gaming, this time in a reverse sweep.

At the 2017 Season World Championship on home soil, RNG was placed into Group C along with eventual tournament winners Samsung Galaxy as well as Europe's G2 Esports and Turkey's 1907 Fenerbahçe Esports. The team performed incredibly well in the group stage and went 5-1, only losing a single game to G2. In the quarterfinals in Guangzhou, they convincingly bested Fnatic 3-1 before a narrow 3-2 loss to SKT in the semifinals in Shanghai. In the wake of Worlds, Uzi and Mlxg were voted to the LPL All-Star team at their positions and helped them take first place at All-Star Los Angeles 2017.

2018 Season[]

Ahead of the 2018 Spring Split, RNG promoted Heart to head coach. They also acquired former Invictus Gaming and Snake Esports top laner Zz1tai, as well as jungler Karsa from the LMS champion Flash Wolves. Following a slow start, while Uzi was taking a break, RNG picked up momentum and finished third in the new West Region with a 12-7 record to secure a playoff berth. In the playoffs, they beat Team WE 2-0, Snake 3-1 and overall top seed Invictus 3-2 to advance to a rematch with Edward Gaming in the finals in Chengdu. RNG won 3-1, including a Baron steal from Mlxg against Clearlove in the decisive Game 4, winning their second LPL title and finally breaking Uzi's curse of never having won a split.

In the 2018 Mid-Season Invitational group stage in Berlin, RNG went 7-3, including a win against LCK champions Kingzone DragonX, and won a tiebreaker against the Flash Wolves to finish first and earn the right to choose their semifinal opponent as the tournament shifted to Paris for the knockout stage. They chose to play Fnatic in their semifinal and swept them before beating Kingzone 3-1 in the finals, including a comeback in the decisive Game 4 after being almost 8,000 Gold down. Not only was it RNG's first international title, but it also marked the first time since the final of MSI 2015 that a non-Korean team had beaten a Korean team in a best-of-5 series.

RNG then proceeded to carry their momentum through the 2018 Summer Split, repeating as champions after a hard-fought 5-game series against IG. Along the way, the team also helped the LPL triumph against the LCK and LMS at Rift Rivals for the second year in a row on home soil in Dalian, with RNG going 3-1 after beating Kingzone again followed by SKT and Afreeca Freecs in Game 5 of the finals. Also, the team provided the majority of the Chinese national team that won gold at the 2018 Asian Games demonstration event tournament, with Uzi, Mlxg, Letme and Ming all being selected.

RNG's LPL Summer victory secured them a Pool 1 seed at the 2018 World Championship. They were placed in Group B, along with Cloud9, Team Vitality, and Gen.G. They advanced to the quarterfinals as the first seed with a 4-2 record. In the quarterfinals, RNG faced off against the European third seed, G2 Esports. In possibly the greatest upset in League of Legends history, G2 Esports managed to take down RNG, 3-2. This marked the end of RNG's year, as they failed to complete the Grand Slam of tournaments this year.
