Riot Games Inc. is an American publisher of games in Santa Monica, California. Established in 2006. Riot Games launched the stand-alone title League of Legends as its first title in October 2009.
History of Riot Games
Founded in 2006 by Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill[1], the company is best known for its flagship game, League of Legends, which has established one of the most extensive esports ecosystems since its release in 2009. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Riot Games has been a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Tencent Holdings since 2011.
Early Competitive Beginnings
Riot Games began organizing League of Legends competitions in 2011 with the inaugural World Championship at DreamHack, which featured a $100,000 USD prize pool. Over the years, Riot has developed a comprehensive global esports infrastructure by launching several regional leagues, including the LCS (North America), LEC (Europe), LCK (Korea), LPL (China), CBLOL (Brazil), LLA (Latin America), LJL (Japan) VCS (Vietnam), and PCS (Pacific), among others.
In 2015, Riot introduced the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) to diversify its competitive calendar. To promote sustainability within the esports ecosystem, several of these leagues transitioned to a franchise model, offering teams greater financial stability and long-term investment opportunities. Riot’s annual events, particularly the World Championship, have since grown into some of the most prestigious and widely watched esports tournaments around the globe.
Riot Games League Restructuring
Riot Games began implementing changes to its League of Legends esports ecosystem in 2023 as part of a strategic plan to optimize its global competitive structure. The goal was to improve the overall quality and sustainability of the scene. Initially, Riot started merging smaller regional leagues to create a more concentrated and competitive environment. By 2025, this restructuring will culminate in the consolidation of its original 12 leagues into just 5 major regions, alongside the introduction of a new international competition called First Stand, featuring the unique Fearless Draft as its main attraction.[2]
