Overview
The Rift Scuttler is a neutral monster found on the updated Summoner's Rift that wanders up and down both rivers. It is unique in that it does not attack but rather tries to run away. When killed, depending on which one is killed, will become a speed shine/ward in front of
Dragon or
Baron Nashor. Once both initial Rift Scuttlers are killed, only one Rift Scuttler can be on the map at any given time for the rest of the game. Respawn locations are randomly determined, but signaled ahead of time with a respawn marker.
After the
Baron Nashor spawns at 20:00, all Rift Scuttlers become permanently corrupted by the Void, transforming into Voidborn with 30% increased health. Killing a Rift Scuttler in this form causes it to release an aura of void energy around itself over 1.5 seconds, granting sight of the surrounding area as it travels and revealing enemies in its path. Enemy champions are revealed for 3 seconds, while non-champions are revealed for 12 seconds. The reveal duration refreshes if they remain in the area where the energy is still spreading. Revealed wards have their health reduced to 1. Once the energy has spread out completely, it continues to grant sight of the area for another 3 seconds.
Strategy
- The Rift Scuttler should be killed before taking
Dragon as it gives a huge speed bonus that could be extremely useful in the event the enemy team attempts to contest. - It could also be killed by the jungler to provide vision for bot or top lane.
Patch History
Similarly, after 20 minutes once Rift Scuttler rises again after being slain, she will be Voidborn Scuttler. When slain, Voidborn Scuttler will send out a massive Scryer’s Bloom effect, revealing all champions and wards in a large surrounding area. Similar to Scryer’s, all wards revealed this way will be reduced to 1 HP.
Rift Scuttler is an important objective, which means it needs to have an appropriate amount of health for its value. Its rewards also need to align better with other jungle camps. Since other camps only scale in experience while Scuttler increases in both gold and XP, we've adjusted Scuttler's rewards to now scale more slowly.
- Health: 1550-3202.5 (levels 1-18, linear scaling) ⇒ 1550-5580 (levels 1-18, non-linear scaling)
- Gold Given: 55-99 (levels 1-9, linear scaling) ⇒ 55-126.5 (levels 1-18, non-linear scaling)
- Experience Given: 20-180 (levels 1-9, linear scaling) ⇒ 20-230 (levels 1-18, non-linear scaling)
- Spawn Time: 3:15 ⇒ 3:30
- Health at Level 1: 1050 ⇒ 1550
- REMOVED See Ya Shiel: Rift Scuttler no longer has a shield
The first Rift Scuttler spawn has been too impactful in deciding the outcome of the early game, so we're reducing its importance with lessened XP. Now that it's squishier (and tinier), you can defeat it more easily and scuttle back to safety sooner.
Jungle Camp Health:
With the increased importance on drakes on bot side, we're spawning Rift Herald a bit earlier and letting her respawn once so teams don't completely abandon their top laners in favor of bot lane presence. (Y'know...more than they already do.)

v8.11
Respawn time increased. Shrine duration increased.
The action around Scuttle Crab is making for a good mini-objective, but it's currently up too often, forcing too much of a jungler's attention onto its continuous respawn. To compensate for fewer overall Scuttle Crabs, we're pushing some experience back into the basic jungle camps (detailed just below).
v8.10
Two Rift scuttlers spawn at the start of the game, but after both die, only one spawns at a time for the remainder of the game. That Rift Scuttler is tankier early and worth significantly more experience.
Rift Scuttler isn’t the hotly contested objective we’d like it to be, so we’re looking to up the reward ya girl Scuttle gives to encourage more interaction between junglers—and teams—as the game progresses. Becoming the Scuttle slayer will now give junglers an experience edge over their opponents, not just a spot of vision.
