Biography[]
Prior to playing League of Legends, Zach "Nientonsoh" Malhas was ranked in the top ten of Heroes of Newerth, often playing with Scarra. He also played World of Warcraft, where he was a rank 1 Warlock in PvP. After seeing Scarra's success in LoL, he moved on to League of Legends.
Nientonsoh's first team was nFear Gaming, where he played with Hai, Yazuki, Arthelon, and nubbypoohbear. When nubbypoohbear departed the team in September 2013, Nien switched roles from AD carry to midlane, and he stayed as the team's midlaner through their sponsorship by Quantic Gaming and then renaming to Cloud 9. In January 2013, Nientonsoh left left Cloud 9 to play for Azure Cats and attempt qualification into the first NA LCS split.
Season 3[]
After failing to qualify with Azure Cats, Nientonosh was picked up by a team that had qualified for the LCS: Team MRN, originally as a substitute. He became the starting AD carry on March 19, moving Heartbeat to support and replacing AtomicN on the roster. Nientonsoh became recognized as a top AD carry player, particularly known for his Tristana play. However, Team MRN was relegated at the end of the split, losing to Velocity eSports in the relegation tournament.
On May 26, 2013 Counter Logic Gaming announced that Nientonsoh would start as their toplaner for the summer split of the LCS, replacing HotshotGG. At this time, Nientonsoh shortened his ID to Nien.[22]
Nien was part of the Season 3 World Championship Analyst desk in September 2013.[23]
2014 Season[]
On April 23, 2014 Nien stepped down from his starting position, citing that "the community’s intense criticism of his play and general attacks towards him had become increasingly taxing mentally, and damaging to his confidence as a player over time."[24] He was replaced by Seraph.
After stepping down from CLG's starting roster, Nien remained a sub for the team and also joined Frank Fang Gaming as their starting toplaner. The team placed fourth in the NACS Summer Series #1. Nien departed the team in June 2014.
In the final week of the 2014 summer split, Nien played four games for CLG while the starting roster was training in Korea in preparation for the playoffs.[25]
2015 Preseason[]
On October 23, 2014 it was officially announced that Nien would be the AD carry for Team Fusion, a team formed to play in the North American Expansion tournament.[26] The team qualified for the Expansion Tournament via the Challenger ladder. They won their first-round match against Team Confusion due to a forfeit from Confusion, and then defeated Enemy eSports 2-0 in the second round. In the offline tournament, Team Fusion narrowly beat Final Five 3-2 after losing the first two games. They then lost to Curse Academy 3-1 and were knocked down to the loser's bracket to face Team Coast. This time, Fusion got ahead 2-0 but then ultimately lost the series and did not qualify for the LCS; however, their placement did qualify them for the NACS Spring Season.
2015 Season[]
After a pattern of losing almost every off-stream game and winning every on-stream game, Fusion finished the NACS season in third place, with a 6-4 record, splitting 1-1 against every team except for CLG Black. In the playoffs, Fusion lost to Team Dragon Knights and then beat Final Five, finishing in third place. Despite Fusion's defeat by TDK, Winterfox chose to play against TDK in the Promotion Tournament, leaving Fusion to face Dignitas for a spot in the summer LCS season. Fusion lost the series 2-3 but retained an automatic qualification into the NACS Summer Season; however, the team disbanded.[27] Nien joined Team 8, replacing maplestreet, though he was unable to start playing with the team before the second week of the summer split.
Team 8 finished the regular season tied for seventh but then lost to Cloud9 in a tiebreaker game and were sent to the 2016 Spring Promotion Tournament. They chose Team Imagine as their Challenger opponent and beat them 3-1 to stay in the LCS for the spring season. In a post-game interview, Nien stated that he would be bootcamping in China in the off-season to improve his individual AD carry play.
2016 Season[]
In October 2015, Immortals was announced as the new brand of Team 8.[28] Nien left the new organization with the rest of the team when their contracts expired in November.
In May 2016, Nien joined Team EnVyUs, who had acquired Renegades' spot in the NA LCS.
Trivia[]
- Known for an Elise play during MLG Anaheim where he took three inhibitors and got a triple kill against TSM, winning the game for CLG.
