Notes[]

  • This item grants the user 25% increased damage to any non-epic monster. This damage modifier does not affect epic monsters nor apply to true damage dealt (such as through Smite Smite).
    • While having a companion, killing large monsters heals you for 36 − 90 (based on average champion level) and restores 19 − 87 (based on average champion level) mana after a 0.3-second delay. These values are increased by 1.25% per 1% missing health or mana respectively. Additionally, you gain 80 bonus experience from killing large monsters.
  • While in the jungle or river, you gain bonus mana regeneration equal to 8.62% − 19.08% (based on level) missing mana.
  • A pet (or Jungle companion) is summoned to follow you throughout the jungle.
  • Pets will attack all monsters currently attacking you (650 attack radius), at a rate of once per second, dealing 20 − 90 (based on level) (+10% bonus AD) (+12% AP) (+20% bonus Armor) (+20% bonus Magic Resist) [+3% bonus health] true damage to each. While the pet is attacking, you are healed for 14 − 37 (based on level) per second.
    • This damage is capped at 15.5 (+10% bonus AD) (+12% AP) (+20% bonus Armor) (+20% bonus Magic Resist) [+3% bonus health] against epic monsters.
    • This damage counts as area of effect regardless of how many targets are hit.
      • It does not benefit from omnivamp.
    • After you stop attacking the current camp, the pet will attack two more times before stopping as well.
    • If your pet is not near you, damaging a camp will cause it to leap from its current location and attack as normal.
    • Pets cannot deal lethal damage to epic monsters.
  • Pets can undergo two evolutions.
  • Pets evolve by being fed treats.
    • Feed your pet 1 treat each time you kill a large monster.
      • You store 1 bonus treat every 60 seconds, increased to 90 after your pet reaches its final evolution form.
        • Bonus treats are tracked on your buff bar.
        • If you have a bonus treat stored, killing a large monster consumes 1 stack to grant you 20 Gold when you feed your pet.
          • After the pet reaches its final evolution form, instead consume 2 stacks.
  • Your item tracks the remaining treats required to feed your pet until it reaches its final evolution. When your pet reaches its final evolution, the item is consumed.
  • At 20 treats, your pet reaches its first evolution, upgrading Smite Smite to Unleashed Smite (Summoner Spell) Unleashed Smite.
  • At 40 treats, your pet reaches its second and final evolution (adulthood), upgrading Unleashed Smite (Summoner Spell) Unleashed Smite to Primal Smite (Summoner Spell) Primal Smite.
    • Your Primal Smite grants you a unique buff, based on your pet type:
      • Mosstomper - Gain a 180 − 300 (based on level) shield that lasts until broken and refreshes after killing a monster camp or 10 seconds without combat.
    • Killing the Blue SentinelSquareBlue Sentinel or Red BramblebackSquareRed Brambleback also leaves behind a buff wisp in their jungle camp for 60 seconds that can be picked up by allied champions to receive the Crest of Insight Crest of Insight or Crest of Cinders Crest of Cinders buff.
      • Allied champions that kill buff monsters also leave behind a buff wisp in the camp for the same duration that can only be seen and picked up by you to receive the respective buff.
  • The user receives 70% − 0% (based on minutes) reduced experience from all lane minions, unless they are 1.5 levels behind the average game level.
  • If your total gold earned from minion kills is greater than 40% of your gold from monster kills, killing a lane minion will grant you 13 Gold less gold and 50% reduced experience. This penalty is indefinitely removed at 14 minutes.

Patch History[]

Patch 14.6

  • One at a Time: Doran's Blade, Doran's Ring, and Doran's Shield may no longer be purchased if World Atlas or Runic Compass is already in the player's inventory. This also applies to the Mosstomper, Gustwalker, and Scorchclaw starting jungle items. Growing your jungle pet all the way and upgrading your support item to its final form removes this restriction.

Patch 14.1

With the Summoner's Rift map update making ganking generally more difficult, we want to make sure that champions who relied on ganking now have a strong fallback pattern of farming jungle camps. We're adjusting the damage contribution of jungle pets in order to close the gap between very fast clears like Graves or Karthus and slower clears like... pretty much every tank. The percent bonus damage from pets does not work on epic monsters, so a new cap has been added against epic monsters that roughly matches last patch's DPS tuning, since pet DPS is increasing otherwise. As with all changes like this, it's hard to get a perfect read on every single possible jungler, plus the rest of the patch will certainly shake up champion power levels as well. We'll make sure to revisit these numbers if clears feel bad, but these changes should overall be a buff to mid-game clears for all the champions who were otherwise too slow to participate.

  • Champion Bonus Damage to Non-Epic Monsters: 42% ⇒ 25%
  • Pet Damage per Second: 15.5 (+10% bonus AD) (+12% AP) (+20% bonus Armor) (+20% bonus Magic Resistance) (+ 3% bonus Health) true damage ⇒ 20-90 (based on level) (+10% bonus AD) (+12% AP) (+20% bonus Armor) (+20% bonus Magic Resistance) (+ 3% bonus Health) true damage
  •  new  Pet Damage per Second Cap vs Epic Monsters: 16-40 (based on level)

Patch 13.21

Last patch made meaningful gains in lowering the jungle's power in how games play out, but unfortunately this also resulted in junglers having less fun in the role. That said, we're looking to revert or buff some of the things that were nerfed in 13.20. Our main goal here is to return safety to the jungle. While this means that junglers will have higher health pools when they gank, it's important that they feel like obtaining their primary source of income by farming camps is roughly as safe as laners farming their waves.
Speaking more broadly to our goals with how the changes from last patch landed, we're happy that laners have relatively more stats in the early game, that jungle tanks have fallback patterns of farming, that junglers spend a bit more time in their jungle between ganks, and that junglers have fewer role-specific strengths not tied to their champion kits.

  • Jungle Companion Damage: 16 (+10% AP) (+20% bonus armor) (+20% bonus magic resistance) (+3% bonus health) ⇒ 15.5 (+12% AP) (+10% bonus AD) (+20% bonus armor) (+20% bonus magic resistance) (+3% bonus health)
  • Jungle Companion Healing per Second: 70% of damage dealt, capped at 12-45 (levels 1-12) ⇒ 12-35 (levels 1-10) (Note: This is now flat guaranteed healing instead of a ratio and a cap)
  • Heal on Monster Kills: 12% Missing Health ⇒ 36-90 (levels 1-10) (up to 2.25x based on missing health)
  • Mana on Monster Kills: 20% Missing Mana ⇒ 19-87 (levels 1-18) (up to 2.25x based on missing mana)

Patch 13.20

Our goals with these changes are to trim some hard-to-appreciate or simply overpowered aspects of the avatar upgrades. For example, most players haven't noticed the epic monster damage reduction. Mosstomper's tenacity made it too hard to disengage from enemy junglers, and Gustwalker's move speed made it too easy for junglers to cross the map quickly. We'll keep an eye out for jungle item balance after this patch to ensure that each of the pets still has a viable place on the roster.

  •  removed  All Primal Smites: Junglers with Primal Smite no longer take 20% less damage from epic monsters when two or more allies are nearby
  • Gustwalker Movement Speed: While in a brush, gain 45% bonus movement speed, decaying over 2 seconds after leaving the brush. Killing a large monster increases this effect to 60% for 2 seconds ⇒ While in a brush, gain 30% bonus movement speed, decaying over 2 seconds after leaving the brush. Killing a large monster increases this effect to 45% for 2 seconds
  • Mosstomper Shield: 60-281 (levels 1-18) ⇒ 180-300 (levels 10-18)
  •  removed  Mosstomper Tenacity and Slow Resist: Mosstomper will no longer grant the user tenacity or slow resistance
  • Scorchclaw Damage Type Requirement: Any damage ⇒ Attacks and Spells (Note: this means that Smite will no longer trigger Scorchclaw's slow and burn)

Patch 13.5

We experimented with junglers having advantages in their own jungle for clearing camps to disincentivize early counter jungling and keep newer jungle players from getting dominated from minute one. Early invades and steals are among the more miserable experiences in the role and a major contributor to players not opting into jungle.

That being said, the costs to the rest of the game with respect to early ganking safety and some higher level strategy have seemed too high, so we're pulling this mechanic back. We’re glad we've explored this and we always believe it's worth trying changes that we think can help rather than being afraid of the potential downsides.
  • Counter Jungling Damage: Junglers deal 20% increased damage to their own camps and scuttle ⇒ ALL CAMPS
Junglers can get very ahead of their enemies by sapping early lane experience on ganks or when catching waves for dead allies. We think junglers who commit to early ganks should fall behind in experience to an enemy who is regularly farming, so this change should help reinforce that.
  • Jungler Lane Experience: 75% of total experience ⇒ 40-75% (scaling from 0-14 minutes)

Patch 13.4

Comeback Kill Experience

Especially in the jungle, kills could quickly swing players back into parity with opponents who are substantially ahead from other actions. Comeback mechanics in League are built to get you within a fighting chance of the opponent, but the comeback system on kills brought you up to their level. This shouldn't be a major shift to leveling in league but it should mean level leads are a little bit stickier.

  • Catchup Kill Experience Gained: 16% per level difference between you and the champion killed ⇒ 20% per level difference (beyond the first) between you and the champion killed

Patch 13.3

INCOME

Treat income currently rewards champions that gank more than champions that prefer to farm. Ideally both playstyles are viable, so we’re tipping the scales to be a bit more balanced.
  • Gold per Treat: 30 ⇒ 20
  • Experience per Jungle Camp with a Companion: Experience for clearing a jungle camp has been increased by 5 experience per camp

OTHER CHANGES

Compared to previous seasons jungle companions are bringing a lot more burst damage into the game, particularly against epic monsters. This has caused situations where some champions appear from the Fog of War and their companions also appear and secure an accidental steal. We believe that securing epic monster secures and steals should be as intentional as possible, so we’re adding 1 more rule to the jungle to give some additional clarity.
  •  REMOVED  Smite Fights are for Champions: Jungle companions can no longer deal lethal damage to epic monsters,

Patch 12.23 - 12/14/2022 Mid-Patch Update 2

  • Jungle Companion Damage Reduction vs Epic Monsters: 30% ⇒ 20%
  • Jungle Companion Gold from Bonus Treats: 35 Gold ⇒ 30 Gold

Patch 12.23

JUNGLE COMPANIONS

We’re introducing a few adjustments to help jungle companions scale better with tanks, while reducing the amount of gold they give to their owners, as junglers were often significantly ahead in gold compared to laners.
  • Companion Attack Damage: 20 (+ 15% AD) (+ 10% AP) (+ 4% bonus health) ⇒ 16 (+ 15% AD) (+ 10% AP) (+ 3% bonus health) (+ 10% bonus Armor) (+ 10% bonus Magic Resist)
  •  NEW  Bigger Companions need More Treats: After their first evolution, jungle companions will consume 2 bonus treats on Large Monster kills and receive the associated benefits
  • Bonus Treat Gold: 50 gold ⇒ 35 gold
  •  REMOVED  Epic Monsters are Spooky: The 20% bonus damage provided by companions no longer works on Epic Monsters

Patch 12.22 -  new

JUNGLE COMPANIONS

It’s dangerous to go into the jungle alone, so take one of these jungle companions! Traditional jungle items will now be replaced by adorable, feisty, and all-around wholesome companions. If you bring Smite, you'll have the option to purchase Mosstomper, Scorchclaw, or Gustwalker in egg form at the beginning of the game. They’ll grow and evolve as you progress in the game by getting stacks from monster and champion takedowns, so make sure to give them lots of treats/stacks and love. In an effort to conserve the Rift ecosystem, we strongly recommend that our furry and scaly friends (and Smite) be kept in the jungle.

Companion Attacks

  • Companions will deal 20(+4% bonus HP)(+15% AP)(+10% AD) and will attack at a rate of 1 attack per second. After their owner has stopped attacking, they will attack two more times and then stop.
  • Companions will heal their owner for 70% of the above number every time they attack
  • Damaging a camp from a distance will cause companions to leap attack toward the camp, dealing the same amount of damage

Companion Mana Regeneration

  • Companions will provide their owners with an increase to mana regeneration equal to [(8*percent missing mana) + (8*percent missing mana)*(level/1.3)*0.1] while in the jungle (including your jungle, the enemy jungle, and the river)

Companion Progression

Jungle companions will evolve twice throughout the game by acquiring treats via the following methods:
  • 1 treat per large monster/champion takedown
  • 1 bonus treat is stored every 60 seconds before reaching the companion’s final evolution form
  • 1 bonus treat is stored every 90 seconds after reaching the companion’s final evolution form
  • When a large monster is killed with bonus treats available, players will receive 2 treats and 50 bonus gold. 1 bonus treat stack will also be removed.

COMPANION EVOLUTIONS

As jungle companions evolve, they will receive the following bonuses at each evolution:

First Evolution

  • Smite damage will be increased to 900 true damage against monsters
  • Smite is now castable on enemy champions, dealing 80-160 (based on level) true damage and slowing the target by 20% for 2 seconds
  • The jungle item will remain in your inventory
  • Companion will visually evolve
  • Smite’s icon will upgrade

Final Evolution

  • Smite damage will be increased to 1200 against monsters and will do 50% of its damage as AoE damage against nearby monsters
  • Players will become empowered and receive buffs depending on their chosen companion
  • The jungle item will be removed from your inventory
  • Companion will visually evolve
  • Smite’s icon will upgrade

Mosstomper

  • Mosstomper’s Courage: Gain a 75-330 (based on level) health shield after killing a monster camp or after 10 seconds out of combat. This shield will remain indefinitely. Players will gain 20% Tenacity and slow resist while the shield is present and for 3 seconds after it has been broken.
  • Protection Buff: Take 30% reduced damage from monsters while at least 2 allies are within 1300 units
