MAD Lions KOI is a Spanish team. They were previously known as MAD Lions and Splyce. For the LVP SLO team that went by the same name, later known as MAD Lions Madrid, see here.
The organization has teams in League of Legends, Clash Royale, CS:GO, and FIFA.
History[]
Parent company OverActive Media rebranded Splyce as MAD Lions in November 2019, with an official announcement on the 29th.[1] Their initial roster for the LEC 2020 Season included four rookie players - Orome, Shadow, Carzzy, and Gistick - along with mid laner Humanoid, the only carry-over from Splyce.
2020 Season[]
MAD had a good start to Spring Split as they went 5-3 in the first four weeks which meant that they were in a 3-way-tie for 4th just one win behind first place. They, however, continued to show varying performances throughout the rest of the split but due to beating their opponents Misfits Gaming and Origen in the last two weeks, they secured 4th place with an 11-7 record which meant a place in the upper bracket of playoffs. For Round 1 they were chosen by G2 Esports and managed to put up a great fight that ended in saving their nexus one hit before defeat to close out the game and therefore the series 3-2. In Round 2 they faced Fnatic and were completely outclassed by them which meant that they needed to beat G2 again in the lower finals to get a rematch against Fnatic in the finals. This time their opponent came better prepared and dominated the series 3-1 to end MAD's first split under their new name. MAD got off to a fairly strong start in the summer split and held the top spot for most of the season only to lose it to Rogue right at the end. They qualified for LEC 2020 Summer Playoffs in the bottom part of the Winners bracket because of how the special system worked for 2020. They lost outright in the first round against G2 Esports and were relegated to the losers bracket, where they managed to beat FC Schalke 04 and then lost to Rogue, clinching them the 4th LEC Worlds spot. They disappointed in the Worlds 2020 Play-In where they barely made knockouts and were eliminated by SuperMassive Esports.
2021 Season[]
Heading into the Spring Split MAD made some changes to the roster where they added toplaner Armut and rookie jungler Elyoya. They finished the regular season with a record of 10-8 and secured 3rd place behind G2 Esports and Rogue meaning they were going to be in the upper bracket of Spring Playoffs. The regular split performance of Elyoya earned him the Rookie of the Split award. For Round 1 of playoffs, G2 Esports selected Schalke 04 Esports which meant MAD facing Rogue. Despite losing the first game, MAD managed to win the next three games and got their place in Semifinals beating Rogue 3-1. The Semifinals where they faced G2 Esports resulted in the same way where they beat G2 3-1 while sending them into the lower bracket. In the lower bracket Semifinals, Rogue upset G2 Esports 3-1 and got their place in the Finals. The Finals was the first finals without Fnatic or G2 Esports being in the final since the start of the LoL European Championship in 2013. In the finals, MAD were down 0-2 but managed to reverse sweep Rogue and became the 4th team ever to win an LEC title beating Rogue 3-2. This meant MAD was the team to represent Europe in the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational.
Trivia[]
- The seven stars in the logo come from the flag of Madrid, the capital of Spain.
- The name "MAD Lions" is actually a play on words; while the name makes sense when explicitly read, MAD does not refer to the English adjective, but is an abbreviation of Madrid. The name is also a reference to the lions in the Cibeles Fountain, an important monument in Madrid.
