Golden Guardians is an American esports organization operated by the NBA team Golden State Warriors.
History[]
2018 Season[]
Golden Guardians were one of four new teams awarded a slot in the newly franchised LCS. The roster for their first split consisted of former Team Liquid top laner and support Lourlo and Matt, former Cloud9 jungler Contractz, veteran mid laner Hai, and rookie AD carry Deftly, with former TSM and Liquid coach Locodoco. They were the only team in the 2018 Spring Split to have a roster consisting solely of North American players but were also predicted to be a bottom tier team partly for that reason. These predictions proved prescient once the season began, as Golden Guardians were the last NALCS team to record a win to start the season, and finished the first half 1-8. Locodoco was also fired by the team after only two weeks of play, allegedly due to making inappropriate remarks to a female Riot employee, and was replaced by assistant coach Akiri. The team did show some improvements in the second half of the season, recording wins over the stronger Team Liquid and Echo Fox, but failed to reverse their early season misfortunes, finishing tenth with a 4-14 record, well out of the playoff picture.
During the mid season break, Hai retired and was replaced by Korean mid laner Mickey, who had spent the spring playing for Team Liquid Academy. Golded Guardians got off to a much better start in the summer split than they had in the spring, matching their spring win total by Week 4 and ending Week 5 in playoff contention with a 5-5 record. However, they completely collapsed over the final four weeks, losing every one of their remaining games and once again landing in tenth place, outside of playoffs.
2019 Season[]
In the offseason, Golden Guardians went out and acquired three veteran players: former TSM top laner Hauntzer, former Echo Fox mid laner Froggen, and former Team Liquid support Olleh, who joined 2018 holdovers Contractz and Deftly. Despite the pedigree of their three new players, the 2019 spring season started off looking like 2018, with Golden Guardians losing their first four games. The team showed marked improvement after that and steadily climbed the standings throughout the remainder of the season. GGS ended their season on a three-game winning streak, and beat FlyQuest on the final day of the split to force a tiebreaker for fourth place, although they lost it to fall into fifth. Their first playoff appearance was yet another matchup against FlyQuest. The series went the full five games, with Golden Guardians initially taking a 2-1 lead, only to lose the final two games, ending their playoff run.
The team made no changes to their main roster for the summer split, and got off to a strong 4-2 start. However, the rest of the split was far more inconsistent for GGS, leading to Australian bot laner FBI and former CLG mid laner Huhi, now playing support, replacing Deftly and Olleh. Golden Guardians finished in a three-way tie for the final playoff spot with 100 Thieves and OpTic Gaming. Seeded into the final round of the tiebreaker bracket due to beating 100 Thieves in both of their regular-season matches, the Guardians lost to OpTic, ending their season. They also did not have enough Championship Points to play in the Regional Finals.
2020 Season[]
For 2020, Golden Guardians retained Hauntzer and FBI. They were joined by Turkish jungler Closer, mid laner Goldenglue, and Keith, who switched positions from bot laner to support. These moves were widely memed and derided by the community before the season began, especially Keith's change of position, as he had not been considered a particularly good player at his original position and had not started in the LCS since 2017. Although they were far from the top of the league, Golden Guardians surprised everyone by being competitive for a playoff spot throughout the spring split, although Keith was unimpressive at his new position, and was replaced by Huhi after Week 6. At the end of Week 8, they sat at 6-10 and seemed likely to be out, but a 2-0 final week coupled with a 0-2 final week from both Immortals and Team Liquid propelled them into yet another three way tie for the final playoff spot. The Guardians were once again seeded into the final round, and this time defeated Dignitas, sending this unlikely team into the playoffs. However, the new LCS playoff format meant that they were seeded directly into the losers' bracket, where they were swept by FlyQuest.
