Generation Gaming (Gen.G) is a Korean multi-gaming team owned by KSV eSports Korea Inc.. They were previously known as KSV eSports.
History[]
2017 Season[]
2018 Preseason[]
Generation Gaming (Gen.G), then known as KSV eSports, acquired the 2017 League of Legends World Champions Samsung Galaxy's roster. The acquisition happened on November 30th, 2017.
2018 Season[]
Wraith and Stitch left the team. Wraith went to join Jin Air Green Wings and Stitch went to join the LMS team, G-Rex. KSV eSports came into the LCK 2018 Spring Split with their 2017 Worlds Champions roster. Former KT Rolster coach, Lee Ji-hoon, joined KSV eSports as the general manager. Through the assistance of Wraith and Jin Air Greenwings defeating the ROX Tigers, KSV eSports managed to qualify for the LCK 2018 Spring Playoff. They met SK Telecom T1 in the wildcard match and conceded defeat with a score of 1:2, thus ending their Spring Split run.
On the 3rd of May, KSV eSports rebranded to Generation Gaming, better abbreviated as Gen.G. Gen.G acquired 2 new players, Fly and MONG. Gen.G qualified for the LCK 2018 Summer Playoffs and ending their regular season with 13 wins and 5 defeats. They were in a 4 way tie with kt Rolster, Griffin and Kingzone DragonX, due to head to head records, Gen.G was fourth.
Gen.G were defeated by Afreeca Freecs in the wildcard match, hence putting them into the Korea Regional Gauntlet. Gen.G ran through the whole Korea Regionals Gauntlet by defeating SKT 3:2 and then proceeding to beat the favorites and Summer finalist, Griffin in a 3:2 fashion. They proceeded to defeat Kingzone DragonX dominantly 3:0. Hence empowering the meme of Gen.G's roster being the Gauntlet Gods. Gen.G came into the 2018 Worlds off one of the best gauntlet runs, but even with the homecrowd backing them up, they failed to show up and ended the group stage with 1-5.
On November 15, Ambition and Crown left Gen.G. Ambition retiring and Crown at the time was a free agent, only to join OpTic Gaming in the NA LCS later in the year. On November 17, Mong, Haru and CoreJJ left as well. Haru eventually joins SKT and CoreJJ joins Team Liquid.
On November 23, superstar jungler Peanut joins the roster.
On December 3, Roach joins the roster.
The team competed at the 2018 LoL KeSPA Cup with the new roster and dominated the new rosters of LCK newcomers SANDBOX Gaming, Kingzone and KT. They met Griffin in finals but ended up losing 0-3.
2019 Season[]
Gen.G could not keep up their early form from Kespa Cup and struggled throughout the split. They failed to qualify for the LCK 2019 Spring Playoffs and just barely avoided relegations. They ended their Spring regular season with 5-13 record, finishing in 7th place.
Going into Summer Split GEN decided to sign veteran Kuzan as mid laner which seemed to pay off as they had better performances than in spring. It didn't seem to be enough to reach playoffs though which lead to bringing Fly back into mid lane. This caused a peak in performance for a few weeks during which they won 6 of their 7 series before Fly was subbed back out and GEN lost their remaining three series missing out on playoffs, gauntlet and the Worlds 2019 participation.
During the "prolonged" off-season announced the departure of all players except their botlane and revealed their replacements KingZone's top lane substitute Rascal, SK Telecom T1's jungler Clid and KT mid laner Bdd. A few weeks later former Jin Air support Kellin joined the team as well.
2020 Season[]
Gen.G's new roster was expected to compete for the title and had a had a promising first showing during 2019 LoL KeSPA Cup as they comfortably swept past Challenger teams GC Busan Ascension and Team Dynamics before putting up a good fight against the relatively attuned T1 roster in quarterfinals.
They confirmed this promising result during the first half of Spring Split in LCK as they went 8-1 nearly only dropping games to the other top teams. Not even a two week break and a change to online play due to the 2019–20 Coronavirus Pandemic could stop their momentum until they dropped the matches against both T1 and DragonX in week 7 and got upset the week after by Hanwha Life. Due to their great record against the bottom teams of the league that was still enough to secure first place in Regular Season and therefore first seed in playoffs though. Back in LoL Park for the finals they were outdrafted and outplayed by T1 in a 0-3 sweep which was disappointing for the viewers, their fans and of course the team themselves.
