Biography[]
Austin "Gate" Yu was born in Sichuan, China and later moved to Florida in the United States. On October 15, 2014 Gate joined Final Five as their midlaner. With that team, he qualified via the ranked 5's ladder for the Spring Expansion Tournament. In the online portion of the tournament, they defeated Zenith eSports 2-1 and then CompLexity.Black 2-0 and qualified for the offline stage along with Team Fusion, Team Coast, and Curse Academy.
Going into the offline stage as underdogs, Final Five surprised by taking Team Fusion to five games, though they did ultimately lose the series, moving to the loser's bracket. There they faced Team Coast and were eliminated, this time losing 1-3.
2015 Season[]
Final Five's Expansion Tournament run qualified them for the NA Challenger Series Spring Season. Partway through the season, when the team was in second place in the standings behind Enemy eSports, the team joined the Coast organization, and Impaler and Sheep joined the Challenger team's lineup. However, after the merge, Final Five's results actually worsened, and they lost all of their remaining Challenger Series games - they did still qualify for the playoffs, but they lost 0-2 to Enemy and then 0-2 to Team Fusion, missing out on the Summer Promotion Tournament. Due to their playoff participation, they were given an automatic seed into the summer NACS season. After playing two games in the NACS with Vortex (renamed from Final Five), Gate left the team and joined Team Impulse as a second support player alongside Adrian, switching roles from mid lane.[18]
After mid laner XiaoWeiXiao was suspended due to Elo-boosting allegations going into the split's ninth week, Adrian returned to the team and Gate switched to mid lane; the temporary suspension was eventually lengthened to a competitive ban until February 2016, and so Gate played with Team Impulse for the rest of the season. Team Impulse had been on a six-game-long win streak prior to Gate's support game, and while they couldn't quite extend the streak through the end of the season, they were able to finish in a third-place tie with Gravity and then win the tiebreaker game. In the summer playoffs, the team beat Dignitas 3-0 before losing to both Counter Logic Gaming and Team Liquid to finish fourth, leaving them with the second-place spot in the Regional Final due to Championship Points. There, they became the second team in a row to fall to underdogs Cloud9 in a reverse sweep and so fell short of the World Championship.
2016 Season[]
Team Impulse rebuilt their roster completely for the 2016 season, with Gate moving from mid lane to support. Facing visa problems for the first few weeks of play, their roster was unstable until week 4 of the Spring Season. After some early success with their substitute rosters, especially with Seraph in top lane, TIP ended the season in 9th place, losing a 5-13 record tiebreaker to Renegades based on their head-to-head matchup.
In the Promotion Tournament, Team Impulse requalified for the Summer Season with a 3-1 win over the Challenger team Apex Gaming; however, on May 8 they were faced with a competitive ruling banning them from continued participation in the LCS due to not paying their players on time and also not having proper contracts in place with players. The team was also fined $20,000 by Riot.[19] Along with Pirean and Mash, Gate joined the organization that purchased Team Impulse's Summer Season seed, Phoenix1.[20]
Faced with visa problems for intended starting jungler Inori, the team was forced to add a substitute jungler Zentinel to their roster, who competed for them for the first three weeks. In that time, Phoenix1 lost all of their series and won only two games total, cementing themselves in last place, behind Echo Fox. Their winless streak continued after Inori's return and through their first series of the fifth week, at which point they had a 3-18 game record and 0-9 series record. In the second series of that week, however, they picked up their first series win against Apex Gaming, with a comeback 2-1 victory after dropping the first game. After this first win, their record improved significantly, and in the second half of the season they went a combined 5-4 - not enough to keep them out of relegations, but enough to surpass both Echo Fox and NRG Esports in the standings for a top seed in the promotion tournament, where they requalified for the LCS with an easy 3-0 win over Echo Fox.
2017 Season[]
For the 2017 season, Gate joined Echo Fox, who had also managed to requalify for the LCS. Echo Fox started the spring split inconsistently, playing well in the early game but struggling in the late game. They sat in fifth place with a 4-4 record at the end of Week 4, but collapsed over the remainder of the split, winning only two additional series. This left the team in eighth place, out of the playoffs but safe from relegation.
Gate stayed with Echo Fox for the summer split, but the team followed a similar trajectory to the spring. The team was again wildly inconsistent, and Gate was the only player of the original starting five to play in every summer game. They finished 5-13, again mired in eighth place.
2018 Season[]
Gate left Echo Fox in the offseason and didn't play again until the 2018 Summer Split, when he joined OpTic Gaming Academy. His new team started the academy split strong, going 5-2 over the first three weeks. He also played two games for the main team at the jungle position, as part of a then-popular double support strategy known as funneling, but OpTic lost both games. Gate returned to the academy team, but despite their strong start, OpTic Academy failed to win a single game after Week 4 and ended the split in eighth place with a 6-12 record.
2019 Season[]
Gate stayed with OpTic Academy for 2019, but started the spring split with the LCS team after starting support Big was benched for unspecified disciplinary reason. With Gate and several other academy players starting, OpTic managed to push across a 2-2 record over the first two weeks, but when Big returned in Week 3, Gate was sent back to the academy roster. Despite their LCS performance, OpTic Academy seemed frequently outmatched in the spring academy split, and never finished a week above seventh place, eventually finishing ninth with a 6-12 record.
OpTic Academy played much better to start the summer academy split, going 5-2 over the first three weeks, good enough to tie for third place. However, the team underwent a punishing eight game loss streak between weeks four and seven, and by the time they broke it, the team had fallen into seventh place. Although they technically weren't eiminated from playoff contention, OpTic Academy was unable to make a Week 8 run, and finished seventh place with a 7-11 record.
2020 Season[]
OpTic Gaming was bought and rebranded to Immortals between the 2019 and 2020 season, and Gate was one of two players to remain with the organization, along with top laner Allorim. Immortals Academy again started the split strong, going 6-4 over the first five weeks. Unfortunately, the team was unable to recover from the loss of bot laner Apollo after he was called up to the main roster in Week 6, and they only managed one more win over the rest of the split, finishing ninth.
Gate moved to the LCS roster to start the summer split, but amidst heavy criticism from the community for benching Xmithie and Hakuho, Immortals lost all of their first four games. To start Week 3, Immortals swapped their academy and LCS rosters, and Gate played out the rest of the split on the academy team. Unfortunately, this stint didn't prove to be any more successful, as the team went 5-7 with Gate in the lineup, and once again didn't qualify for playoffs.
