  • Biography
  • Story
The most feared duelist in all Valoran, Fiora is as renowned for her brusque manner and cunning mind as she is for the speed of her bluesteel rapier. Born to House Laurent in the kingdom of Demacia, Fiora took control of the family from her father in the wake of a scandal that nearly destroyed them. House Laurent's reputation was sundered, but Fiora bends her every effort to restore her family's honor and return them to their rightful place among the great and good of Demacia.

From an early age, Fiora defied every expectation placed upon her. Her mother had the finest craftsmen of Demacia fashion the most lifelike dolls for her. Fiora gave them to her maids and took up her brother's rapier, forcing him to give her lessons in secret. Her father obtained a host of dressmaking mannequins for her personal seamstress to craft wondrous dresses. Fiora used them to practice lunges and ripostes.

At every stage in her life, Fiora has embodied all that is noble in Demacia, striving for perfection in all things and brooking no insult to her honor or that of her family's ideals. As the youngest daughter of House Laurent, she was destined for a life as a political pawn, to be married off in the grand game of alliances between patrician houses. This did not sit well with Fiora, whose temperament saw only dishonor in being maneuvered by another's will, even that of her beloved father. Despite her resistance, a politically advantageous marriage was arranged with an outlying branch of House Crownguard, and plans were set for a summer wedding.

The ancient families of Demacia sent their invited representatives to House Laurent to attend the marriage ceremony, but instead of meekly accepting her fate, Fiora defied it. She declared before the assembled host that she would sooner die than be dishonored by allowing someone else to control her fate. Her husband-to-be was publicly shamed and his family demanded a duel to the death to wipe away Fiora's scandalous insult.

Fiora immediately stepped forward, but as Master of House Laurent, it was her father's duty to accept. The champion of House Crownguard was a truly deadly warrior, and defeat was almost certain. To lose would see House Laurent ruined and his daughter exiled in disgrace. Presented with so stark a choice, Fiora's father made a decision that would damn his family for years to come. That night, he attempted to drug his opponent with a draught to rob his blows of speed, but his attempt was discovered and the Master of House Laurent was arrested.

Demacian law is notoriously harsh and unforgiving. Its justice allows no leeway, and Fiora's father had broken its most fundamental code of honor. He would suffer public humiliation upon the executioner's scaffold, hanged like a common criminal, and his entire family expelled from Demacia. On the eve of his death, Fiora visited her father's cell, but what passed between them is a secret known only to her.

An ancient and all but forgotten code of honor allowed for a family member to expunge the shame of one of its number in blood, and thus avoid the virtual death-sentence of exile. Knowing they had no choice, father and daughter faced each other within the Hall of Blades. Justice would not be served by a mere slaying, Fiora's father had to fight and be fought. The battle was blindingly swift, a dance of blades so exquisite that those who witnessed it would never forget what they had seen. Fiora's father was a fine swordsman in his own right, but he was no match for his daughter. They said farewell in every clash of the blade, but in the end a tearful Fiora buried her rapier in her father's heart and assured her family's continued place in Demacia. With her father dead at her feet, Fiora became the head of House Laurent (much to the surprise of her older brothers...).

Though the honor of House Laurent was not entirely ruined, scandals are not easily erased. In the years that followed, Fiora proved a sagacious leader of her House and swiftly learned not to make the mistakes of brash youth. She became a formidable mistress of blade and negotiation, cutting to the heart of any matter with her customary clarity and seemingly cruel directness. Some still speak of her House's disgrace or decry how standards have fallen that a woman should dare call herself ruler of a noble House, but only in private. For when such gossip reaches Fiora's ear, she is quick to call out those rumormongers and demand justice on the edge of a sword. Yet even here, she is not without pragmatic cunning, offering each challenger a way out that will allow honor to be satisfied without death. So far, none have accepted her offers, and none have ever walked away from a duel with Fiora.

With the fortunes of House Laurent on the rise, Fiora has no shortage of suitors, but none have yet proven worthy of her hand. Many suspect Fiora herself puts every suitor through an impossible gauntlet of courtship in order to remain aloof and unmarried, for a wife would, traditionally, relinquish power to her husband.

And Fiora has never done anything traditionally.

"I have come to kill you for the sake of honor. And though you possess none, still you die."

A MATTER OF HONOR

The man Fiora was going to kill was named Umberto. He had the look of a man very sure of himself. She watched him talking to four men, so alike they must surely be his brothers. The five of them were cocksure and preening, as though it was beneath their dignity to even present themselves in the Hall of Blades in answer to her challenge.

Dawn cast angled spars of light through the lancet windows, and the pale marble shimmered with the reflections of those who had come to see a life ended. They lined the edges of the hall by the score, members of both Houses, lackeys, gawkers and some simply with unhealthy appetites to see bloodshed.

“My lady” said Ammdar, her second older brother, handing her a mid-length rapier with a bluesteel blade upon which light moved like oil. “Are you sure about this?”

“Of course” replied Fiora. “You heard the tales Umberto and his braggart brothers were spreading in the Commercia?”

“I did” confirmed Ammdar. “But is that worth his death?”

“If I let one braggart slide, then others will think themselves free to wag their tongues” said Fiora.

Ammdar nodded, and stepped back. “Then do what you must.”

Fiora stepped forward, rolling her shoulders and sweeping her blade twice through the air – a sign the duel was about to begin. Umberto turned as one of his brothers nudged him in the ribs, and anger touched Fiora as she saw his frank appraisal of her physique, an appraisal that lingered far too long below her neck. He drew his own weapon, a long, beautifully curved Demacian cavalry saber with golden quillons and a sapphire inset on the pommel. A poseur's weapon and one entirely unsuited to the requirements of a duel.

Umberto stepped up to his duelists' mark and repeated the sword movements she had made. He bowed to her and winked. Fiora felt her jaw tighten, but clamped down on her dislike. Emotion had no place in a duel. It clouded swordplay and had seen many a great swordsman slain by a lesser opponent.

They circled one another, making the prescribed movements of foot and blade like dance partners at the first notes of a waltz. The movements were to ensure that both participants in the duel were aware of the significance of what they were soon to attempt.

The rituals of the duel were important. They, like The Measured Tread, were designed to allow civilized folk to maintain the illusion of nobility in killing. Fiora knew they were good laws, just laws, but that didn't take away from the fact that she was about to kill the man before her. And because Fiora believed in these laws, she had to make her offer.

“Good sir, I am Fiora of House Laurent” she said.

“Save it for your grave-marker” snapped Umberto.

She ignored his puerile attempt to rile her and said “It has come to my attention that you did injure the good name of House Laurent in an unjust and dishonorable manner by the indulgence and spreading of malicious falsehoods in regards to the legitimacy of my lineage. Therefore it is my right to challenge you to a duel and restore the honor of my House in your blood.”

“I already know this” said Umberto, playing to the crowd. “I'm here aren't I?”

“You have come to your death” promised Fiora. “Unless you choose not to fight by giving me satisfaction for your offense.”

“How might I give milady satisfaction?” asked Umberto.

“Given the nature of your offense, submit to having your right ear severed from your head.”

“What? Are you mad, woman?”

“It's that or I kill you” said Fiora, as though they were discussing the weather. “You know how this duel will end. There is no loss of face in yielding.”

“Of course there is” said Umberto, and Fiora saw he still thought he could win. Like everyone else, he underestimated her.

“All here know my skill with a blade, so choose to live and wear your wound as a badge of honor. Or choose death, and be food for crows by midmorning.”

Fiora raised her blade. “But choose now.”

His anger at what he assumed was her arrogance overcame his fear and he stamped forward, the tip of his sword thrusting for her heart. Fiora had read the attack before it was launched and made a quarter turn to the left, letting the curved blade cut only air. Her own blade swept up, then down in a precise, diagonal arc. The crowd gasped at the wet spatter of blood on stone and the shocking suddenness of the duel's ending.

Fiora turned as Umberto's sword clattered to the granite flagstones. He fell to his knees, then slumped back onto his haunches, hands clutched to his opened throat from which blood pumped enthusiastically.

She bowed to Umberto, but his eyes were already glassy and unseeing with impending death. Fiora took no pleasure in such a slaying, but the fool had left her little choice. Umberto's brothers came forward to collect the corpse, and she felt their shock at their brother’s defeat.

“How many is that?” asked Ammdar, coming forward to collect her sword. “Fifteen? Twenty?”

“Thirty” said Fiora. “Or maybe more. They all look the same to me now.”

“There will be more” promised her brother.

“So be it” answered Fiora. “But every death restores our family honor. Every death brings redemption closer.”

“Redemption for whom?” asked Ammdar.

But Fiora did not answer.

Abilities[]

Active: Fiora identifies Vitals on nearby enemy champions. Fiora will reveal a new Vital after striking the last one, or after 15 seconds.

When Fiora strikes a Vital, she deals true damage equal to
[3% (+4% bonus) target's max], receives increased Movement Speed that decays over 1.75 seconds, and recovers health.

Patch History[]

Patch 10.16

Q cooldown decreased; on-hit cooldown reduction decreased.

As we near the big games, we’ve identified a lack of scaling skirmishers who can keep pressure in a side lane. Because of this, we want to keep Fiora in tip-top form, and to be able to offer teams more strategy. We’re helping her strike quickly, strike deftly! in early fights, along with increasing her mobility for split pushing. To balance it out, we’re also lightly tapping down her cooldown refund.

Lunge Q - Lunge

COOLDOWN : [16/14/12/10/8]
13/11.25/9.5/7.75/6
ENEMY HIT COOLDOWN REDUCTION : [60% (enemy hits refund 6.4/5.6/4.8/4/3.2 seconds)]
50% (enemy hits refund 6.5/5.63/4.75/3.9/3 seconds)

Patch 9.19
Q can now hit turrets and wards. E2 can now crit turrets.

Fiora's in an acceptable place when it comes to matchups in lane, but she struggles to convert her lane victories into game victories.

Lunge Q - Lunge

TOWER DEFENSE : Can now hit turrets and wards (will prioritize champion vitals, ultimate targets, champs, dying minions, turrets, and wards, respectively)

Bladework E - Bladework

STONEHENGE : The second basic attack can now deal bonus damage to turrets

Patch 9.16
E cooldown decreased early; bonus attack speed now scales.

Giving Fiora more strength to capitalize on momentum she gets from a lead in lane.

Bladework E - Bladework

COOLDOWN : [13/11/9/7/5]
11/9.5/8/6.5/5
BONUS ATTACK SPEED : [50%] 50/60/70/80/90%

Patch 9.10
W now blocks Braum's and Kennen's stuns rather than preventing them from proccing.

Previously, Fiora's Riposte stopped some champions' last passive stack from being applied, which effectively delayed the following stun rather than blocking it.

Riposte W - Riposte

INTERACTIONS WITH DEBUFFS : Riposte [prevents Braum and Kennen from applying the last stack of their passives] allows Braum and Kennen to apply the last stack of their passives, blocking the stun (and still blocking the damage from the attack)

Patch 9.8
W damage and slow/stun duration increased. E cost flattened at all ranks.

We're rewarding Fiora when she successfully outplays her opponents and making it easier for her to wave clear and take towers without running out of mana in the middle of taking one down.

Riposte W - Riposte

v8.22
Small improvement to Lunge targeting.

Someone said to us "Hey, it's weird that Lunge doesn't focus the target who gives Fiora a big heal circle when they die." We said "Yeah that's weird," and then made this change.

Lunge Q - Lunge

PRIORITIES : Lunge still prioritizes R Vitals then P Vitals, but now prioritizes an R-affected target next even without a Vital to proc
LESSER PRIORITIES : After the above prioritization, Lunge looks for a low-health champion in range, last-hittable minion in range, champion in range, then nearest unit (unchanged)

v8.19
Healing from passive procs increased.

Fiora is a really sharp champion, with matchups where she dominates and matchups where she struggles to gain an edge. We’re being careful with her, but our changes in 8.17 still haven’t gone far enough to reward aggressive play in lane. Increasing the sustain she gets when going for vital procs on her opponents should help resolve this.

v8.17
E crit damage on second attack increased at early ranks.

Fiora's late game is pretty strong, but she could use some more dueling power in the early game to get there more often. Because, you know, duelist.

v7.18
Passive’s movement speed increased. Ultimate now grants passive’s movement speed within its area.

Back in patch 7.14 we made some changes to curb some of Fiora’s mobility, but those nerfs coincided with shifts in the meta to leave the Grand Duelist in a rough spot. In a world where Bramble Vest didn’t exist, forcing Fiora to work reach her enemies—and stick to them—made sense. In a world with Bramble Vest, however, Fiora’s dealing less damage (opponents have more armor) and sustaining less off Vital procs (Bramble Vest’s Grievous Wounds), so that handicap no longer makes sense. We’re reverting 7.14’s mobility nerfs and will keep an eye on Fiora.

RE-ADDED Fiora once again gains Duelist's Dance movement speed bonus while in Grand Challenge’s circle

v7.16
Duelist’s Dance bonus movement speed increased at later ranks of Grand Challenge.

Back in 7.14 we gave Fiora’s opponents better opportunity to both retaliate as she aimed to pierce their vitals, and out-maneuver the Grand Duelist during Grand Challenge. Removing Grand Challenge’s free movement speed had the desired effect, but the hit to Duelist’s Dance left Fiora less nimble than we’d like. We’re pulling back a bit on the changes to her passive in response.

v7.14
Passive’s movement speed down. R no longer grants Duelist’s Dance’s movement speed when near the target.

Playing around Vitals gives Fiora a lot of power, but her opponents are at too much of a disadvantage to stop her from doing so. When Fiora’s striking lone Vitals, the movement speed Duelist’s Dance provides often lets her escape retaliation. When Fiora goes all-in with her ultimate, the movement speed she gets allows her too much leeway to out-maneuver her opponent even before hitting any Vitals at all. In both cases, Fiora’s movement speed rewards need to be toned down so opponents have a fair chance to win the game of footsies.

v6.14
Passive heals more. Q scaling increased at early levels.

Fiora’s a devastating side-lane duelist when given the appropriate support, but she’s struggling to find success outside of the professional scene. As mentioned with Azir above, it’s important for late-game powerhouses to have early windows of vulnerability, but the degree to which Fiora's being punished at early levels is just a bit too high. We’re improving Fiora’s early trade potential to help tip the scales in her favor when the Grand Duelist starts making the right moves.

Duelist's Dance Passive - Duelist's Dance

Lunge Q - Lunge

RATIO : [0.55/0.7/0.85/1/1.15 bonus attack damage] 0.95/1/1.05/1.1/1.15 bonus attack damage

v6.6
Passive deals less damage, but scales higher early. E slow and range down.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a high-damage carry champion builds primarily tank items and still manages to deal enough damage to duel everyone while being impossible to take down. It’s a problem as old as League itself, but these days Fiora’s become the posterchild for game health issues when Tanks and Carries cross the streams. It’s a standard problem, but also one that’s often misunderstood - it’s not the damage that Fiora (or any carry) does, it’s the whole ‘not making a tradeoff to get it’ that’s an issue.

Mixing up the bases and scaling goes a long way to making sure the die-hard full damage Fioras out there still get to carve up opponents with skilled play. That said, this fencer’s still got problems even before we start talking items, which is what the other half of this changelist is addressing. Right now, Fiora’s wealth of tools to activate Duelist’s Dance are so slanted in her favor that it doesn’t feel graceful or elegant (or possible) to deny her the satisfaction of striking your weak spot. We’re cleaning up some of her advantages there to make Fiora’s 1v1’s more compelling than ‘instantly proc 3 vitals - now see if you can deny me the last one.’

Duelist's Dance Passive - Duelist's Dance

BASE TRUE DAMAGE : [3% of the target's maximum health] 2% of the target's maximum health

Bladework E - Bladework

SLOW : [40/45/50/55/60%] 30%
BONUS RANGE : [50] 25

v6.4
W cooldown up. E cooldown down, but starts after the attacks finish.

Demacia's Grand Duelist has more than earned her title with Fiora outshining her peers in almost every way. We're not looking to take Fiora out of the arena for good, so we're focused on lowering her strength in two ways. 1.) Give opponents more windows to stick damage on Fiora, particularly when she misplays. 2.) Remove a particularly abusive priming case that heavily inflates her burst damage (see: Jayce's Hyper Charge changes way back in 4.21). Fiora's fun and flashy, but we prefer her highs to come from moments of truly skillful reactions, not hidden cooldown mechanics.

Riposte W - Riposte

COOLDOWN : [19/18/17/16/15 seconds] 24/22/20/18/16 seconds

Bladework E - Bladework

COOLDOWN : [15/13/11/9/7] 13/11/9/7/5 seconds
LIMITED BLADEWORKS : Cooldown now starts [on cast] after second hit

v6.2
Vitals will now spawn with a little more predictability.

On release, Duelist's Dance would alternate on spawn location between either the two 'front' vitals (facing blue side) or the two 'back' vitals (the ones facing red side). This was to get some elements of play and mastery in the mix, as well as preventing pure randomness from messing with either Fiora or her opponent. At some point, however, that logic exploded and went to randomness.

We're fixing it for the reasons we just mentioned.

Duelist's Dance Passive - Duelist's Dance

DIRECTION SELECTION : [Random] Alternates between top-right and bottom-left sides

v5.20
R’s healing zone duration lowered, but scales with vitals hit.

Since her rework, Fiora’s risen in the ranks of solo queue and professional play alike as a truly dominating solo lane. While we chipped off some of her base stats last time around to make Fiora more exploitable in bad matchups, it appears we’ll have to go further to knock the Grand Duelist off her throne.

This patch we’re focused entirely on the reward incentives for Grand Challenge. While it makes sense for Fiora to receive a massive heal for successfully and skillfully slashing away at her opponent’s Vitals, it’s instead often used as a low-effort way to reset the fight after her team collapses on a single target. We want Fiora to provide benefits for her team, but this skewed the ability too far toward a ‘massive teamfight ult’ on a champion that’s already adept in 1v1 situations. We’re clipping its effectiveness as a ‘fire-and-forget’ ability, but keeping the greatest reward for when Fiora truly exposes her challengers.

Grand Challenge R - Grand Challenge

DURATION : [5 seconds] 2 seconds
VICTORY ROSE : Heal duration goes up by 1 second for every Vital Fiora strikes beyond the first
MAXIMUM DURATION : Unchanged

v5.18
Base armor, base health, and health per level reduced.

As a master duelist, Fiora’s new skillset gives her a wide array of tools to tactically dodge or mitigate incoming damage with grace. The issue isn’t smart use of her maneuvers, but rather her effectiveness when she fails to execute. At present, she’ll just beat you over the head, vitals or not. Hammering away at base stats mean that fighting Fiora (especially pre-6) should feel like less of a stat-check and more of an engaging clash of blades, putting more pressure on her to succeed with style or pay the ultimate price.

Fiora, the Grand Duelist, will be updated with the launch of 5.15. Head to her update article for details on her new look and kit!

v4.20
Changing the way Blade Waltz does damage. It'll do the same to a single target, but less AoE with Tiamat / Ravenous Hydra.

"While it's a little weird to have to nerf a champion due to their overwhelming synergy with a core item (Tiamat / Ravenous Hydra in this case), Fiora's a more unique case as Tiamat lets her turn an already low-counterplay ability (Blade Waltz) into a high-damage area-effect low-counterplay ability. Additionally, some of our predictive models show that Fiora will probably benefit from the 2015 preseason changes, so we wanted to make some low-scope preliminary changes. This is a long context to say that we're re-emphasizing Fiora's duelist capabilities so she needs to be more opportunistic when looking for a dance."

    • Fixed a bug where Blade Waltz was not dealing damage to "revealed" stealth targets

Context: Fiora’s Blade Waltz has been hindered by reliability issues for a while now, so we’re making some quality of life changes to help ensure that her ultimate is suitably satisfying to use.

  • Blade Waltz
    • Will now choose untargetable and invisible targets if necessary to continue the Blade Waltz. If Fiora needs to jump to such a target to continue Blade Waltz, she will do so, though the ability will not deal damage to untargetable/invisible units. If the target is revealed when Fiora jumps to them (in brush), she’ll deal damage as normal

v1.0.0.153

  • Blade Waltz
    • The cooldown and manacost are refunded if Fiora is suppressed while casting Blade Waltz before it has started to have any effect

v1.0.0.152

  • Base Movement Speed increased by 25.

v1.0.0.142

  • Blade Waltz cooldown reduced to 130 / 120 / 110 seconds from 150 / 130 / 110

v1.0.0.136

  • Fixed a bug where Fiora could consume the second cast of Lunge on the original target while still moving toward the original target.

v1.0.0.135
