Evil Geniuses is a North American League of Legends team. For the organization's history as a European team, see Evil Geniuses.EU.
Founded in 1999, Evil Geniuses is a North American esports organization and one of the oldest in the world, that has had a collection of players/teams over a multitude of games such as: Counter Strike 1.6, Counter Strike; Global Offensive, DotA 2, League of Legends, Quake Live, StarCraft II, Super Street Fighter IV, and World of Warcraft. In late 2012 to the start of 2013, Team EG had started looking for a roster to support in the League of Legends scene. The organization formed their first League of Legends team in January 2013 with the acquisition of the former Counter Logic Gaming EU roster.[1]
History[]
Pre-Season 4[]
In December 2013, Evil Geniuses moved the gaming house to America and acquired the spot from Velocity eSports at the promotion stage for taking a spot into NA LCS. However, mid laner Henrik "Froggen" Hansen and top laner Mike "Wickd" Petersen left the team and formed Alliance to acquire the Evil Geniuses's spot in the EU LCS.[2] At the promotion tournament, Evil Geniuses defeated Determined Gaming 3-0 and solidified their position in the North American LCS.
2015 Preseason[]
Due to a new policy limiting the ability of GoodGame Agency to brand LCS teams instituted by Riot on November 21, Evil Geniuses will have to change their brand for the 2015 season.[3] Their NA LCS spot ultimately went to Winterfox.
2019 Season[]
On May 29, 2019, PEAK6 Investments had acquired Evil Geniuses.[4][5]
On September 26, 2019, Evil Geniuses, now under new management, announced that the had acquired the LCS slot of Echo Fox and would return to the LCS in 2020.[6][7]
2020 Season[]
For their first split back in the LCS, EG acquired multiple high-profile players: 2019 LCS Summer Split MVP jungler Svenskeren, dynamic former Team Vitality mid laner Jiizuke and former World Champion bot laner Bang. With former Cloud9 Academy top laner Kumo and ex-C9 support Zeyzal filling out the roster, Evil Geniuses were competitive to begin the Spring Split but seemed unlikely to seriously contend in the standings. On the public relations side, the team was more successful, attracting a lot of attention with their unique "Evil" branding. After a 5-7 record over the first six weeks, the team turned a corner, and went 5-1 over the remainder of the season to finish in a three-way tie for second place with 100 Thieves and FlyQuest. Seeded into the final round of the ensuing tiebreaker, EG defeated 100 Thieves to secure the higher seed going into playoffs. There, they were seeded into the winner's bracket of the new LCS playoff format and defeated FlyQuest 3-1, only to lose to eventual champions Cloud9 3-1 in the next round. Given a second chance in the loser's bracket, Evil Geniuses were rematched against FlyQuest, but this time came out on the losing end, again by a 3-1 score. This ended their return split in third place.
