Notes[]
- Both passives trigger on both basic attacks and on any abilities that deals physical damage.
- Physical damage over time abilities will apply one stack on every tick.
- On-hit effects, which is different from on-hit abilities, do not apply an additional armor shred stack.
- The armor reduction stacks from The Black Cleaver apply only to enemy champions. They will not affect minions, neutral monsters or structures such as turrets and inhibitors.
- Pets that deal physical damage will apply stacks, even if they don't apply on-hit effects or spell effects.
- The very first instance of physical damage does not get the benefit of the armor reduction. The physical damage dealt is calculated first, and the debuff is applied after. This means the full benefit of the reduction is seen on the seventh hit, after all six stacks have been applied.
- Armor reduction and penetration effects stack.
- Multiple instances of physical damage applied at the same time will only apply one stack.
- Ornn can upgrade this Item to a Mastwerwok Item:

- Recipe: Phage + Caulfield's Warhammer + Ruby Crystal + 400 Gold ⇒ Phage + Kindlegem + Pickaxe + 225 Gold
- Attack Damage: 55 ⇒ 40
We're softening some of Black Cleaver's stacking rules, which will make the item much stronger for some champions who used to be able to apply two stacks at once.
- Black Cleaver no longer prevents champions from applying two stacks for basic attacks and abilities that apply after on-hit effects (e.g. Senna).
We want Black Cleaver to be a core component of most fighter builds. One key tenet of fighter combat patterns is target agnosticism, which is one factor that differentiates them from assassins. Not only do we like when they're good at hitting the front line, we also want them to be a little bit cooperative, which allows some of their combat power to come from team fighting and not just side lane 1v1s.
- Armor Reduction: 5% ⇒ 6%
- Max Armor Reduction: 25% ⇒ 30%
Black Cleaver is currently a bit underwhelming compared to other fighter itemization options in the game. And while we don't think it needs to be the default fighter item (League of Cleavers anyone?), we want to make sure it still feels worth picking up for the champions that appreciate it. To that end, we're giving Black Cleaver quite a few minor buffs that should make the item feel better for its users.

Even with our changes to Black Cleaver’s functionality in patch 11.5, it hasn’t been a popular pick this season. We’re sharpening one of its unique points to better compete with its alternatives.
Adjusting Black Cleaver to be better suited for longer fights while packing it with more punch for its cost.
Patch 10.23
Now deals missing health damage against fully stacked targets. No longer grants movement speed on-hit.
Black Cleaver did many things decently well, but we want it to do fewer things better. Moved its movement-speed-granting effects to more movement based items and replaced with an execution effect on targets you've fully shredded.

v7.4
Builds out of Kindlegem instead of Caulfield’s Warhammer. Health up, attack damage down.
While The Black Cleaver is meant for fighters like Darius and skirmishers like Fiora, it packs so much offensive power that glass cannon champs are buying into it as well. We’re shaking up Cleaver’s build path and stat offerings to better align with the extended fights its intended users thrive in. Swapping Caulfield’s Warhammer for a Kindlegem works out well for champs who need to live long enough to cycle through several rounds of spellcasts, versus champs who want to down their target in one go.
Fun fact: this is basically the version of Black Cleaver we had between patches 5.8 to 5.22, with a few gold numbers moved around. Though the change to Warhammer made sense in the 2016 pre-season, a lot’s changed about the game since then and the old version’s a better fit for where we are today.
v6.9
Cost reduced. -5 AD.
For those keeping up with recent top lane trends, builds have skewed toward the tankier end for the majority of 2016. Black Cleaver is a natural ‘release valve’ to help counter these champions, providing necessary shred and sticking to run down even the beefiest defenders. When we noticed that its primary users (Renekton, Gnar, Riven to namfew) weren’t in the best spot performance wise, it made sense to bring the item that binds them together down to the price-points of other important spikes.
v5.8
New build path, much more health, much, much more armor shred stacking, but no more flat armor penetration. More cleaver-y, if that makes sense.
- "We're going to be blunt - when The Black Cleaver's good, it's good at many things: blowing up squishies via flat armor penetration and busting down tanks with its stacking armor shred. Because of this, we've had to tune the item accordingly, making it pretty mediocre at both of its aforementioned jobs.
- No longer!
- Well, sort of. One of our goals with a revisit to The Black Cleaver was to basically choose one of those paths and go sprinting down it. There are already a bevy of options when it comes to blowing up squishies, so tank busting became the name of the game for the new Black Cleaver. The design here should make sense for anyone who wants sustained, tank busting combat patterns, so we won't dwell too much on that. Go try it out! "
