  • Biography
Anivia is a benevolent winged spirit who endures endless cycles of life, death, and rebirth to protect the Freljord. A demi-god born of unforgiving ice and bitter winds, she wields those elemental powers to thwart any who dare disturb her homeland. Anivia guides and protects the tribes of the harsh north, who revere her as a symbol of hope, and a portent of great change. She fights with every ounce of her being, knowing that through her sacrifice, her memory will endure, and she will be reborn into a new tomorrow.

Anivia is an ancient Freljordian demi-god who represents the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth, intrinsically associated with the changing seasons. To those who venerate her, she is the elemental soul of the Freljord—a symbol of hope, and a sacred catalyst of change.

Stories passed down through the ages often tell of how she rewards those who are kind and humble. On the rare occasion a mortal glimpses her—or at least claims to—she is described as a noble spirit-bird of ice, with glittering wings that span the heavens, and a piercing cry that can be heard over even the fiercest storm.

The songs of the nomadic Notai tribe tell how Anivia’s birth first brought snow into the world. When she burst from her giant egg of ice, tiny pieces of it were hurled into the sky, and it has fallen as snow ever since. And, according to the sagas of the Mourncrow tribe, the frigid winds that scour the Freljord originate from the first beats of her wings.

Indeed, the full power of winter is Anivia’s to command, and to those who seek to desecrate her homeland, she is a bitter foe. When roused to anger, she can cleave fortresses and mountains, and her screech can summon blizzards cold enough to shatter steel.

One of the most enduring and respected beliefs is that Anivia’s greatest gift to the Freljord was the creation of True Ice. Infused with elemental magic, this unmelting substance is pure and potent, and the greatest seers and ice-mages have long strived to use shards of True Ice to amplify their might, while weapons that have even a tiny sliver forged into them are deadly beyond belief.

When mortals first arrived in the Freljord, Anivia welcomed them. Seeing that they could not withstand the cold, she guided them to secluded valleys where they could shelter, become established, and slowly harden themselves against the elements. She nurtured and watched over them for those first precarious centuries—and they, in turn, worshipped her.

Anivia hoped that these newly arrived tribes would remain unified in defending the Freljord from outsiders… but slowly, infighting and blood-feuds became all too common, making an invasion inevitable. According to legend, a greedy southern king marched his warriors up through the mountains, seeking to claim dominion over the northlands and shackle their wild magic for himself. So enraged was Anivia at the outsiders’ hubris and disrespect that she blasted them with a snowstorm that lasted a century and a day. Scattered standing stones can still be seen on the Scouring Plain, which the locals claim are all that remain of that ancient army.

Other tales include the Avarosan legend of Ulla Shatter-Spear, an Iceborn warmother who was favored by Anivia for saving a young hawk from a rimefang wolf. Across her lifetime, the Cryophoenix protected Ulla from harm, and when she finally fell in battle, having witnessed almost a hundred winters, it is said that Anivia welcomed her with wings spread wide.

If all these legends are true, then Anivia must have witnessed the rise and fall of countless mortal civilizations. While there are still some dwindling remnants of those earlier times, most have long been forgotten, and buried beneath millennia of ice.

But death cannot touch Anivia herself. The sagas speak of how she has been struck down and slain a handful of times throughout history, though she is always reborn—for as long as the Freljord exists, her soul is immortal. While it may be hundreds or even thousands of years before she rises again, each rebirth coincides with the dawning of a new era. Thus, her appearance, while regarded as a wondrous blessing, is often the harbinger of something terrible on the horizon.

Once, it is said, she sacrificed herself against a march of towering Balestriders. Anvia knew she could not slay these colossal creatures, and so she plunged into the ice beneath their feet, shattering her own body in order to entomb them.

Recently, some claim Anivia has hatched from the egg once more, and that she has appeared before the new leader of the Avarosans—the Warmother Ashe. In her, perhaps Anivia sees one who may be able to finally reunite the Freljord.

Yet if the Cryophoenix has indeed returned, as more and more shamans and spirit walkers proclaim, then it must be asked: what great threat has she come to face?

"I am the fury of the blizzard, the bite of the wind, and the cold of the ice. I am the Freljord."

Basic attack animation sped up. Q cooldown, missile speed, and detonation damage increased; passthrough damage and cost decreased; now Chills enemies it passes through. E cost flattened and damage increased. R cooldown now scales; base damage decreased.

Anivia's been feeling out of date for a while. Though technically balanced, we thought she could use an update to her playstyle. Since she also lost a bunch of power from preseason changes, we're using this as an opportunity to fluff and buff her feathers. To make room for these modernization improvements, we're also cutting some base damage from her R so that she doesn't fly too close to the sun.

Patch 10.18

Crystallize.png W - Crystallize

BUGFIX : No longer applies the Aspect of the Dragon debuff on enemy champions

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

BUGFIX : Storm SFX loop now plays correctly in Fog of War

Patch 10.6
R Iced duration increased.

Making a small consistency change to Anivia's Iced debuff (the one that doubles the damage of her E) duration on her ultimate so that all forms of it in her kit apply it consistently.

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

ICED DURATION : [2] 3 seconds (now the same as Flash Frost's Iced duration)

Patch 8.24

Anivia's attacks and abilities need some audio and visual love to get to current League quality and readability standards.

LOTS OF SFX : Anivia's SFX have been cleaned up for her joke, taunt, dance, laugh, death, and idle actions (voiceover unchanged)
BASIC ATTACK : New missile and hit VFX
PASSIVE - REBIRTH : Glow VFX increase the closer she is to revival and the hatching moment is more impactful
FLASH FROST VFX : more clearly indicate the hitbox and center zone
CRYSTALLIZE : Updated wall model and frosty ground VFX. SFX updated for clarity and icy thematics.
FROSTBITE : Missile is more distinct from Anivia's basic attack. "Crit" hit is brighter and better defined.
GLACIAL STORM : Freljord range indicator added. Blizzard VFX improved. New SFX added for when the storm is fully formed and when Glacial Storm deactivates.
BLACKFROST ANIVIA : Q and R visuals updated to retain impact of a legendary skin
FESTIVAL QUEEN ANIVIA : Gold range indicator adjusted to better match hitbox

Q cooldown decreased at early ranks. Q damage ratio increased.

Patch 8.9's mana changes hit Anivia harder than most mages, so we're looking to give her some power back. Rather than return her previous level of waveclear, we're looking to up her potential in fights.

Flash Frost.png Q - Flash Frost

COOLDOWN : [12/11/10/9/8]
10/9.5/9/8.5/8 seconds
DAMAGE RATIO : [0.4] 0.45 ability power (reminder: this applies on both passthrough and detonation)

25 mages have more mana regen and base mana, but less mana growth. 5 other mages have more mana regen.

We’re increasing mana regen on the champions most affected by the changes to Doran's Ring and Last Chapter. Mages are also getting some changes to their mana pools and their mana growth. Overall, they’ll be up a bit of starting mana and mana regen, but be substantially down on mana per level.

BASE HEALTH : [467.6] 480

With Aegis of the Legion's old aura out of the game, squishy champions who were relying on it to give them enough magic resist find themselves a bit on the burstable side.

HOORAY : Champions who previously gained no magic resist per level now gain 0.5 per level

R flashes when it finishes expanding. Fixed a bug with R’s expansion time.

Anivia’s changes in 6.23 greatly increased the importance of Glacial Storm’s expansion mechanic. We’re adding a visual cue to signal when the storm’s fully formed.

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

CLARITY Glacial Storm visually flashes when it becomes fully formed
BUGFIX : Glacial Storm now always takes 1.5 seconds to expand, rather than randomly between 1.5 and 1.75 seconds

W cooldown lowered. E no longer deals increased damage against targets in R until the storm is fully formed. R forms faster.

Anivia’s R-E combo has been a staple of her play for years, but the instant, unavoidable burst and lane pressure it provides overshadows the success Anivia sees from trapping foes in Glacial Storm with well-placed walls and Q stuns. That said, burst damage does seem like a fair reward when Anivia makes use of all the tools available to her. We’re helping her earn her damage payoffs by hastening Glacial Storm’s “cook” time and letting her drop more walls, but giving her less instant gratification.

Crystallize.png W - Crystallize

COOLDOWN : [25 seconds at all ranks] 17 seconds at all ranks

Frostbite.png E - Frostbite

COOLDOWN : [5 seconds at all ranks] 4 seconds at all ranks
CHILLED BONUS : Deals 200% damage to targets recently hit by Q - Flash Frost or [R - Glacial Storm] a fully-formed R - Glacial Storm

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

TIME TO FULLY FORM : [3 seconds] 1.5 seconds
DAMAGE PER SECOND : [80/120/160] 40/60/80
RATIO : [0.25 ability power] 0.125 ability power
EMPOWERED DAMAGE : Empowered storms deal [150%] 300% damage (same damage as live)

E damage lowered.

Anivia’s historically succeeded by establishing control over the battlefield through persistent threat of AoE lockdown. Frostbite is her follow-through when she lands a crowd control ability, but it hits so hard it’s single-handedly winning trades for her. We’re toning Frostbite’s damage down so Anivia has to utilize her entire kit to succeed, rather than leaning on a single ability.

Frostbite.png E - Frostbite

DAMAGE : [55/85/115/145/175] 50/75/100/125/150
CHILLED DAMAGE : [110/170/230/290/350] 100/150/200/250/300

R cost per second up.

Kicking off the patch, we have a minor tune-up (or tune-down) to everyone’s favorite Cryophoenix. Anivia’s doing pretty well since our 6.10 follow-up, but the changes seem to have gone just a hair too far in making her storm too easy to sustain. Glacial Storm should represent a significant investment, so we’re pulling back.

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

COST : [30/45/60 mana per second] 40/50/60 mana per second

R radius and cast range increased. Mana cost down.

The first of many follow-ups to our Midseason mage updates, we begin with Anivia. While we’re confident in the controlling shift we made with the Cryophoenix in 6.9, Anivia as a whole ended up less reliable in the process. With a heavier focus placed on Glacial Storm’s uptime, we’re making it easier for her to maintain her signature zoning tool.

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

COST PER SECOND : [40/50/60 mana] 30/40/50 mana
CAST RANGE : [685] 750
INITIAL RADIUS : [150] 200
SWAGSTORM : Using Zhonya’s Hourglass no longer interrupts Glacial Storm

One of our oldest champions, Anivia’s always been a power-pick for those willing to weather the storm of her steep mastery curve. While her strategic identity as a counter to heavy sieging is already strong, we saw an opportunity with Midseason to sharpen her traits as a disruptor even further. By focusing into her already-potent CC, Anivia cements herself as

Flash Frost.png Q - Flash Frost

DAMAGE : [60/90/120/150/180] 60/85/110/135/160
RATIO : [0.5 ability power] 0.4 ability power
STUN DURATION : [1 second] 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4/1.5 seconds
SLOW : [20%] 20/30/40% (scaling with rank of Glacial Storm)

Frostbite.png E - Frostbite

MISSILE SPEED : [1200] 1600
CAST RANGE : [650, measured from Anivia’s hitbox center to her opponent’s] 600, measured from Anivia’s hitbox edge to her opponent’s (overall range buff of ~35)

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

CAST RANGE : [625] 685
RADIUS 400 : 150
SLOW : [20% at all ranks] 20/30/40%
ATTACK SPEED SLOW No longer slows attack speed
GLACIAL EXPANSION Now expands to a radius of 400 over 3 seconds
FINAL FORM At maximum size, Glacial Storm’s damage, chill duration and slow are increased by 50%

R’s leash range is shorter and chills for less.

Anivia’s synergies with the new Keystone Masteries are pushing her to pretty absurd levels of power, especially in a metagame where teams primarily rely on sieging towers to succeed. These changes are all about forcing Anivia to commit herself to danger if she wants to command the same level of respect in controlling and defending objectives.

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

CHILLED DURATION : [2 seconds] 1 second
MAXIMUM range : [1200] 1000

In a world without mana potions (and generally less early mana regeneration), we've identified a few champions for some emergency rations, giving early mana boosts until they can get their footing and purchase items to make up the deficit. This also means we can really understand which champions relied on mana potions as a crutch to limp through the early to mid game, and we can give additional love if necessary.

The following champs have +50 base mana and -3 mana scaling (net -1 mana at level 18):

E’s frosted bonus works on Dragon and Baron.

While not the worst at taking neutral objectives thanks to her amazing zoning potential, Dragon and Baron’s inability to be CC’d meant that Anivia’s bonus damage interaction with Frostbite wasn’t working - this changed for Ashe during her rework, and seeing as we’re pretty big fans of consistency we figured we’d fix it as a neat buff for ice birds everywhere.

Frostbite.png E - Frostbite

STAY FROSTY : Now treats Dragon and Baron as ‘frosted’ for the purposes of Frostbite’s double damage if they’ve been hit by Flash Frost or Glacial Storm in the last few seconds.

  • SPLASH : Anivia has received a splash update! Click her portrait below to view the full image!

Bird is the word.

"We're hoping to give some extra love for new players picking up Anivia, as they'll have a clearer understanding of how to use this cool chick. "
  • Flash Frost.png Q - Flash Frost
    • NEW STUNNING INDICATORS Flash Frost now has a cast indicator to show stun range
    • NEW STUNNING CLARITY Flash Frost now has an icy cloud around its particle to show stun range (only the Anivia player can see this)

"Anivia's received a small quality-of-life buff to create a clear best use case (if you just want more damage) for Glacial Storm."

  • Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm
    • UTILITY: Now deals a tick of damage when cancelled

Summary: We’ve increased the speed of Anivia’s basic attack projectile and brought down the mana cost of Flash Frost and Crystallize. Additionally, Anivia’s ult will now have a warning effect when she is almost out of Glacial Storm’s range.

We call these kinds of changes “modernizations,” where we bring a champion up-to-date with the current state of the game. Usually this means mana cost changes (typically reductions), but it also extends to playability improvements, like range indicators or gameplay improvements.
