100 Thieves is an American esports organization affiliated with the NBA team Cleveland Cavaliers.
History[edit]
100 Thieves is by former Call of Duty professional player Matthew "Nadeshot" Haag. It was first formed in April 2016 but disbanded in July of the same year. In November 2017, the organization rejoined esports when they joined the NA LCS for the 2018 season. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert gave 100 Thieves a multi-million dollar investment for their re-entry into esports.
2018 Season[edit]
Spring Split[edit]
For their inaugural split, 100 Thieves acquired 2017 NALCS Summer All-Pro top laner Ssumday, veteran jungler Meteos, former Phoenix1 mid laner Ryu, former Immortals AD carry Cody Sun, and veteran CLG support Aphromoo. While this team did not lack experience and pedigree, with Meteos and Aphromoo having won two NALCS Championships apiece, opinions were mixed as to the ability of the players to perform at a high level. Meteos had not been a starter in the NALCS since the 2016 Summer Split, Ryu had taken part of the previous split off due to burnout, and there were questions about Aphromoo's playing ability despite his reputation as a team leader.
100 Thieves charged out of the gate to begin the split with a 3-1 record over the first two weeks. However, many of their games were exceedingly long, and the team failed to look unbeatable in any of them. These struggles began to show in their record, as the team slumped over the next two weeks to finish the first half of the season at 4-5. However, 100 Thieves embarked on a powerful second half surge, going 8-1 as frontrunners Echo Fox and Cloud9 stagnated. Cody Sun posted some of the best AD carry statistics in the league, and Aphromoo popped off on several different playmaking supports. The Thieves managed to beat Echo Fox in their final game of the season, then beat them again in the first-place tiebreaker to secure the 1st seed in their first split as an organization. For their stellar play, both Cody Sun and Aphromoo were named to the All-Pro Team, and Aphromoo also became the first support to be named NALCS MVP.
Their playoff bye meant that 100 Thieves entered the playoffs in the semifinals, where they faced 6th seeded Clutch Gaming, who were fresh off of an upset victory over TSM the previous week. 100 Thieves were heavily favored but were unable to dominate as expected; despite taking 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the series, Clutch came back with a win both times to force game 5. Clutch took an early lead in the final game, but the Thieves were able to stall it into a tense 74-minute game reminiscent of their early season wins, which they managed to win to send themselves to the finals. However, their semifinal struggles would prove prescient, as in the finals 100 Thieves were swept in a quick three games by an equally veteran Team Liquid lineup, finishing the playoffs with 70 Championship points and a slot in the 2018 NA-EU Rift Rivals.
